Chapter 1

One month earlier….

Edward and Haley walked into their house to see their parents sitting near the kitchen table looking worried.

It was sunset and they had just returned from playing at the park.

Haley noticed that her Mother placed one of her hands gently over her Father's which he had placed on the table.

They turned to them as they walked towards the kitchen table.

Haley could tell that something was wrong by the look on their faces.

'Something has happened.' Haley thought. 'What's gotten them so worried? Did something happen while we were out?'

"What's wrong?" Edward asked with concern in his voice and face.

'He can feel it as well. Edward seems to be always one step ahead of everyone. He always seems to know what people are thinking somehow.'

"Why do you look so worried?" Edward asked again.

Their Mother turned to face her children and smiled slightly. "Hello dears how was the park?"

Haley rolled her eyes. "Your avoiding the question Mother."

Elizabeth laughed nervously. "So I am. It's nothing to worry about. You're Father and I heard that the flu is getting worse out there. More and more people are getting it."

Deep down Haley knew that her parents were worried about the illness that was spreading.

Their father nodded in agreement as he turned in his chair to hold up four masks in his hands for Edward and Haley to see. "Your mother and I were talking while you were both out. We want you to wear these masks for now on so that you won't catch it as well. It's only a precaution."

"It's spreading further every time someone catches it." Haley said worriedly. "I wonder who is going to be the next victim before someone decides to do something about it."

Edward turned and hugged Haley. "You don't have to worry about the flu Haley." He said as he hugged his younger sister tightly in a bear like hug. "I'll protect you from it. I'll make sure that you won't get it. I've protected you from tougher things."

Haley sighed in her older brothers arms. "Thank you brother. Promise me Edward that you won't get it? I want you to make me promise that you won't get ill from that stupid illness."

Edward nodded. "I promise. I'll always be here to protect you baby."

Haley nodded in satisfaction. "Good." She said as she turned to her parents and looked at the masks in her Father's hands. "Then we don't need those masks to wear against the illness. No one in this family is getting sick. We don't need protection from something that won't affect us."

"Sweetie you don't really know that." Elizabeth said. "You never know who is going to get sick next. The illness strikes anyone without warning."

"Well I know that no one in this family is going to get sick. Edward promised me that. And since he promised me we don't need those masks."

Haley walked over to her father and snatched the masks away from him and chucked them straight in the bin beside her.

Edward looked at his mother with worried eyes but didn't say anything.

"We don't need to wear them." Haley said. "The illness won't affect this family."

Edward smiled at his younger sister's determined face and walked over to her side to pull her into a hug. "Your right. I believe that you are right. No one in this family is going to get the illness."

Haley smiled into her brother's chest. "Thank you Edward."

Edward bent down to whisper into her ear so his parents couldn't hear. "There is also no need to be afraid. I know that you're scared. You can't lie to me. Know that I am here with you."

Haley sighed. "I know."
