Of Mice and Men

This is the missing Snippet before George Kills Lennie.

Lennie kneeled, staring across the river where George said "Look down there across the river, like you can almost see the place" and he did dutifully, he always looked up to George, George always looked after him.

George stared at Lennie; he could hear them coming, Carlson, Slim and Curley.

"I thought you were mad at me George" said Lennie with picture perfect innocence. George's heart clenched.

"No," said George. "No, Lennie. I ain't mad. I never been mad an' I ain't now. That's a thing I want you to know." The Mental of the gun was cold against the heat of George's hand.

The voices came close now. George raised the gun and listened to the voices.

Lennie begged, "Le's do it now. Le's get that place now."

"Sure right now, I gotta…we gotta…"

And George stared down the barrel of the gun at the child-like man kneeling before him. He steadied the gun and brought it closer to the back of Lennie's head. His hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied.

George's finger tightened around the trigger, but Lennie spoke, halting him in place.

"George? I want to tell you something"

"What is it?" George asked, almost afraid.

"I love you George" Lennie whispered, to George it was as if he shouted it to the world. "And well always be together, right George, 'cause were family, isn't that right George." Lennie's innocence weighed heavily on George's heart, he almost wished he could see the look in Lennie's eyes when he said it, but he knew that would be his un-doing. Silence filled the area, Lennie shifted his knees.

"George?"

"Yha Lennie, we'll always be together" George's eyes softened, his eyes filled with a far away look. George frowned, and closed his eyes. He pulled the trigger.

The crash of the shot rolled up the hills and rolled down again. Lennie jarred and then settled slowly forward to the sand and he lay without quivering.

George shivered and looked at the gun, and then he threw it from him, back upon the bank, near the pile of old ashes. The brush seemed filled with cries and the sound of running feet. Slim's voice shouted "George. Where you at George?"

But George sat stiffly on the bank and looked at his right hand that had thrown the gun away. The group burst into the clearing, and Curley was ahead. He saw Lennie lying on the sand. "Got him, by God." He went over and looked down at Lennie, and then he looked back at George. "Right in the back of the head," he said softly.

George didn't here him, his mind was elsewhere, somewhere far, he saw himself standing next to Lennie at their farm house, on their own land, with all their different coloured rabbits.
