yeah yeah i know everyone and their mother has written one of these, but i couldnt help it. i wanted to write something serious for once. this is how i always thought of the ending in the anime. i loved how the last thing Light ever saw was L finally getting his justice :) anyways, enjoy!
Disclaimer: i still dont own Death Note. :C
Damn! It wasn't supposed to end like this! This death, couldn't it have waited? There was still so much he had wanted to do…the world was still rotten, and it would stay that way without him to guide it, to reshape it, to purify it. Damn it all! He was so close… if only-
A stab of pain broke through Light Yagami's thoughts as he stumbled onto the staircase in the warehouse he had run to. Where he was trying to run to he couldn't say, but he knew what it was he was running from.
He was escaping from the shocked faces of the task force, those naïve idiots playing detective, who couldn't believe that the man they had trusted for so long was in reality their greatest enemy.
From Near, that little brat, who didn't realize how important it was that Kira remain in power, that the world needed a god like him to keep it untainted and safe from those who would corrupt it. Fool. They were all fools. The world could have been so much better…if only-
Another jolt forced Light to collapse onto his back, and he realized he was crying. Tears slid slowly down his face onto his shirt, mixing with the blood congealing from the wound he had received earlier. The old Light would have been ashamed to look so pathetic, so frail. But the old Light was gone, gone and replaced with the monster that was Kira, the parasite that latched itself onto Light from the moment he had seen the notebook, and never let go.
The last rays of the fading sun illuminated his weakened body, throwing shadows on the once handsome face, now twisted into a gruesome expression as pain shot through his heart. Ryuk must have finally written his name in the Death Note. How ironic he thought, that Kira would be killed with his own weapon. So be it. It was better that way, preferable to die a god then live the wretched life of a criminal.
The last seconds of his life ticked by slowly. Light could no longer move, forever trapped on the staircase, with nothing to do but quietly wait for death. He felt his eyes begin to close, and he fought to keep them open, to fight the silent blackness that was starting to engulf him. He knew he was fighting the inevitable, but he still fought nonetheless. He struggled to remain conscious, to stay alive, when suddenly a figure blocked his vision, thin and hunched over, like a bent spoon. Coal black eyes gazed coldly down at him through a curtain of black hair.
Light could do nothing but gaze in revulsion at the man who had been his greatest obstacle, the lone barrier between Kira and world domination. Why have you come back? he thought, You should be gone forever! You lost!
Neither man spoke, no longer could words express the hate that each felt for the other. Light's vision began to blur, the sinister outline fading into the darkness. Memories flashed in Light's mind as he remembered the scenario reversed; L ceasing to exist as he, Kira, smiled triumphantly over him.
Is that why you've come back L? Revenge?
He had not spoken the words aloud, but the figure seemed to hear him. As Light took his last shaking breath, he heard the reply, so soft it was almost a whisper.
"Justice."
