It's the little things she notices about the lad that make her wonder. Wonder what exactly? She had no idea but she was curious all the same.
The first thing she noticed was his habit of making himself appear small whenever he became the center of attention or felt embarrassed. The way he raised his shoulders in an attempt to hide reminded her of a turtle trying to hide in its shell and she found it endearing in a way.
She remembered how she had tried to teach the lad how to properly shoot an arrow. Goodness knows the lad could use the help. She had told him not to be afraid of breaking the bow and to relax and take aim. She didn't know he would snap the string. What ensued is something she can't forget. His expression went from shock to mortification to straight out embarrassment. His face had turned a fascinating shade of red for her. She found herself staring at him and in that moment she decided he looked sweet like that. He rubbed the back of his neck and mumbled out what sounded like an apology. She sent him a small smile to which he shyly returned.
Being the bold lass that she was, she gently took his hand in hers. She was pleased with the way the lad slightly jumped at her touch. She remembered correcting his stance when he attempted to shoot another arrow. She remembered his face going red again but she mostly remembered the warmth of him next to her.
Merida also noticed the way the boy could change his demeanor depending on his setting. When he was with her, he was painfully shy and sweet. When he was seen hanging around the other young lords and their clans he seemed more at ease. She heard from Macintosh of how they joked around with each other. Macintosh even told her that the lad had accidently thrown him off his horse just by nudging him.
Well the boy was strong. Immensely strong she remembered how he had broken a log in half with his bare hands. She had witnessed him picking up a bench with men on it and throwing them off as he swung the bench around.
Merida had noticed a lot of things about the Young Macguffin. It made her wonder about him. Wonder if he was sweet on her? Wonder if he would someday joke around with her like he did with Young Macintosh. Wonder how it would feel to be picked up by him.
Yes, she wondered many things, but what she wondered most was why she wondered these things in the first place?
