It had been a harsh winter. If the dreadful,freezing cold weather wasn't enough,the snow,which was very deep,had made it hard for the deer in the forest to find food.

But one day,two of these deer,a doe and her son,Bambi,went out on the meadow,where they found a small patch of grass sticking up through the snow.

It wasn't very long after the two of them started eating when the mother heard someone coming. She looked around and sniffed the air. Bambi didn't notice any of this until...

''Bambi,'' The mother said, ''quick! The thicket!'' She ran. Bambi followed her. Shots began to ring out,which meant only one thing---Man was in the forest.

''Faster! Faster,Bambi!'' Bambi ran as fast as his legs could carry him.

''Don't look back! Keep running! Keep running!''

Bambi had almost made it home when another shot rang out.

Bambi had reached the thicket at last. He looked behind him.

''We made it!'' He said happily, ''we made it,Mother! We--'' His mother was gone!

''Mother?''

He stepped out of the thicket,calling for her.

After roaming around for a while he found his mother lying in the snow. She had a wound from Man's rifle on her shoulder. Blood was oozing out of it,melting the snow. Bambi was horrified and had no clue what had happened to her.

Suddenly,he heard someone coming. Frightened,he turned around. His father,The Great Prince Of The Forest,was standing in front of him.

''Your mother can't be with you anymore,'' He said softly, ''Man has taken her away.''

Bambi was heartbroken. He started to cry.

''Come,my son.'' The Great Prince said to him,walking away. Bambi sadly followed him. But before they could go anywhere...

''Bambi...'' A voice whispered. Bambi and his father stopped in surprise and looked behind them. Bambi's mother was staggering to her feet.

''Mother...'' Bambi said,bewildered, ''you're okay?''

She limped over to them. Bambi,overjoyed,snuggled her.

But both of the deer noticed that The Great Prince wasn't joining them. He was standing there looking around for something.

Bambi didn't understand what the fuss was about until all three of them heard the sound of a dog barking. Bambi froze in terror.

The dog burst out of the bushes and headed straight for the wounded doe. Without waiting a second,The Great Prince charged at the dog with his head lowered. He stabbed the dog slightly with his mighty antlers,knocking it over.

But this only made the dog angrier. It leapt on The Great Prince,who bucked him off. The dog had enough now. It ran away in fear.

All seemed well until another shot rang out.

''Run!'' The Great Prince shouted,running off. The mother deer followed him. But Bambi was still standing there frozen in fear.

The Great Prince ran to him and nudged him. ''Run,Bambi!'' He shouted, ''Don't stand there if you can run!'' Then he ran away again. In a flash Bambi was close behind him.

A shot rang out. Then there was another,then yet another. The three deer had escaped in the nick of time.

It wasn't long before the three of them were back home. The Great Prince bid Bambi and his mother farewell,then he left with nary a sound.

Bambi and his mother went back into the thicket. All was well once more.
