yes, this is what happens when I get bored and then deside to read all the Kenpachi fights. Acctualy, I planned on writing a full sized story and this was just the start, but I loved this little snapshot so much that I just had to submit it by itself. If I ever finish the big one I'll take this one off and just leave that one.
You know that thin, wiry strength that some really skinny people have? You know how that strength is often more potent than that of the muscle-bound giants who make the earth shake as they walk? How they can not only defeat the giant by speeding and dodging all its hits but also punch back with more strength and precision than anyone expects? Most of the Soul Society, when they first saw Kenpachi, thought that he was one of the giants, slow, lumbering, and heavily muscled. But, in truth, he was one of the fast skinny people with their irrational strength. It was just that his skeleton was huge. Normally no one could see how thin he was in comparison to his frame, as it was all concealed underneath his raged, baggy clothing, but now, as he floated on his back in a small lake just inside the Seireitei, it was extremely obvious. All of his ribs stuck out and his many scars painted diagonals across them, some pale despite all his time in the sun, others thick, ropey things.
His eye patch, the top half of his shihakusho, his taicho's coat, and his zanpaku-to all lay piled up on shore. He still had the bells in his hair, but the now famous silhouette of his head was more limp than likely to take out eyeballs (there's actually a funny story about that, as Ikkaku will tell when he is drunk enough). He still had the bottom of his shihakusho on because captain-general Yamamoto had decided that 110 degrees Fahrenheit was just a little bit too hot and ordered all the shinigami to take a half day off and swim in the lake and what had been the private haven from the heat for a few was now bustling with people.
Most of them left a wide space between themselves and Zaraki; without his eye patch his spirit energy was devastating to all but a few and his general demeanor kept all but his friends away. Ikkaku, Renji, and Iba were all making fun of Yumichika's shower cap, which he would not come into the water without. Right now he was sulking on the shore and would not speak to anyone. Yachiru, who had somehow managed to get another shinigami to smuggle pink water wings from the living world, was swimming around blowing bubbles and trying to find fish to put in Renji's hair. Unfortunately for him she had been successful, and somehow some of the fish got tangled up there. Kenpachi was floating on his back with his eyes closed, torn between trying to find peace from all the chatter and feeling incredibly bored.
Suddenly he heard a feral growl. His eyes sprang open. Then a lot of confusing, wild, and above all angry spirit energy and a loud furious cry rang out through the Seireitei. Now everyone had noticed. He smirked. The day was finally getting interesting.
