Across the Stars

"Theo, honey, it's almost time for bed, sweetie."

The young boy turned to see his mother coming out of the kitchen, towel in hand from washing the dishes.

"I'm not tired, mommy…"

He loved to stargaze when the sky turned really dark. His mother told him you couldn't see stars when you're in the city because of light pollution from the buildings. Luckily, they lived in a trailer out on the highway. Mommy told him she was doing research, and along the way, they may see his father…

Scooping up her tiny son in her arms, a tender kiss was planted on his cheek.

"Little warriors need their rest…" she began. "If you get yourself to bed in the next fifteen minutes, I'll read you a story."

A smile drew upon Theo's lips. He loved to hear those kinds of stories, especially about grandfather, grandmother, uncle, and the rest of the family. He was proud to see that most of the stories were about daddy.

Today was an eventful day. Mommy had lots of work to do, so she couldn't play with Theo today. He found a book about astronomy and carried it around with him all day, even on the picnic lunch at the weather site.

"Auntie Darcy showed me this book about stars, and far up north, there are the Northern Lights, and it's all way up in the Artic!"

His mother giggled.

"That's very far, and very cold. Many don't know this, but daddy told me when 'Northern Lights' happen on Earth, grandpa's giving his blessings and protection to the beings in the Artic."

"He does?"

Mommy, nodded, still smiling.

"Thousands of years ago, your father's family was well-known. On Earth, our family's around here closer than you think, Theo."

The young boy's brow scrunched in thought. He only had mommy around. Daddy would teach him how to weld magic, play Asgardian sports. Words would come alive as he told him stories of his grandfathers and ancestors.

If only daddy could be here too with Theo and mommy…

"… I wish daddy could to read to me tonight."

"Honey, you know that he has business with grandpa," she kissed his golden locks. "He would be more than happy to come back with us, but there are some things that can't be controlled."

"I want to see him."

He felt his mother's embrace grow firmer. "He'll be here, Theodred. I know it. Maybe he'll be here sooner than you think. He watches over you... always."

He looked out of the window into the starry heavens. He came to his father's home of Asgard, and made the occasional trip once in a while ever since he was an infant. The journey from Earth to the home of his grandfathers seemed short… but mommy and daddy told him even though it may seem fast, they were light years and galaxies apart.

"He's watching over me…?" he heard himself say, the stars gleaming their brightest.

"Yes…" his mother placed a hand on the golden chain of the royal pendant on his neck, indicating his lineage and ancestry, "always."

From Asgard, the God of Thunder couldn't ask for more as he smiled from above.
