She'd been living in the woods for almost a month. She'd come to meditate. It was always a tradition with her people. In the white's world, it's called meditation. But in her Lakota world, it was a vision quest. Her Guardian would send her a sign & she would be able to help those in need. She'd always been told that she would be the next Medicine Woman of her people. That's how it had been for generations in her family. Every woman was a Medicine Woman. Every mad was a Medicine Man. Her Lakota name was Fire Star Running Fox.
She heard the sound of hoof beats approaching. But she dared not open her eyes. If it was her Guardian, she was not supposed to look into her eyes. But when she heard the White Man's tongue asking what she was doing, she knew it was not her Guardian. She opened her eyes & saw six horses with riders staring down at her. She slowly stood up & noticed a curly haired girl. Seeing the girl, she averted her eyes & bent at the waist, speaking in Lakota to her.
