Cat walked home alone that day her friends had ditched her again. "Cat you can't come with us" Jade said looking at the rest of the group with sneaky eyes, "You wouldn't like it…it's too old for you." Cat had just nodded watching while Jade's car pulled down the street and around the corner. Cat knew exactly what they were doing, they did it every Friday. They'd stop at the pizza parlor and get food and after that they would go play laser tag without her. Cat sighed turning around on her porch and entering her home, it was empty as always. Her father was probably out getting a drink or two or ten while her brother was out doing who knows what. Cat was alone again, and she wouldn't have it any other way. When Mr. Valentine got home he hit her, the retched stench of alcohol on his breath. When her brother got home he just swore at her and disappeared into his room. That's how it happened every night, and Cat was glad she knew what was coming. The small red head hung her pack up in the hall closet before going into the living room and sitting down at her piano. She brought out some music, A little more homework from Cat's favorite musical. She sighed before running her fingers against the smooth white keys and pressing down lightly on the starting note. She hummed along with it before starting the song, Cat couldn't help but smile. Music always made her feel better inside, like her mother was there with her wrapping her loving arms around Cat's shoulders. Mrs. Valentine was a beautiful woman and Cat loved her very much, but then she got into that accident. She died instantly, "She felt no pain" the doctors had said to Cat and her father that day. Cat knew it wasnt true, there was more pain then you would ever think possible. Not for her mother no, but for the family. Who hurts more, the one in the grave or the one's watching over them? It hurt Cat to think about things like that but it made more sense in her mind then the quadratic formula or anything else that was too old for her in this world. Cat sighed pressing the last note of her song, her father was home. Cat heard his car door, he was coming for her. Thump, thump, thump went his big boots on the porch, click, click, click went small heels behind him. Cat sighed, her father had brought home another woman, this was going to be a long night. The girl disappeared up the stairs right when the pair entered the house. Her father was a big guy and he was leading a smaller woman into the home. Cat didn't want to hear the pleasure noises that were soon to be coming from her father's room so Cat threw open her window and jumped out. She walked along the sidewalk kicking a pebble with her slipper, everything would soon be fine. Everything would be happy; her father would hold her sweetly…like a real father should. But that wasn't tonight…tonight Cat slept under the moon. With the wind as company, the stars as nightlights, and the fresh grass as her pillow. Soon…she would feel no pain.

The End
