What the hell?

What the HELL!?

That was the only thought running through my head as I ran through the streets of the burning town. Dodging flaming rubble of the crumbling architecture a new thought came into my head.

Crap, crap, crap, crap!

This didn't make sense. One moment I was finally drifting to sleep, the next I was standing in the middle of a medieval village in flames. I KNEW playing breath of the wild until three a.m. was a bad idea!
I didn't have time to scold myself, that much was obvious. I needed to get out of here. The problem was; this place is a fricken' maze! I swear I passed by that water pump at least three times now! I had lost track of how long I had been running too! five minutes? Ten? Whatever, didn't matter, I needed to get to safety and- oh look a plaza, that doesn't seem like a good place to- OH GOD THAT'S A DEAD BODY!

I froze in my tracks and simply stared, now it wasn't the fact that I was looking at a corpse, TV and video games basically desensitized me to that stuff. No, it was the fact that this guy didn't burn to death, he was cut in half. I mean that literally, his bottom was separate from his top. Someone Darth Mauled this poor soul. And beside this corpse was an abandoned market stall with Swords and other medieval weaponry. Just as I was about to resume running after seeing something that will probably scar me for life I heard a loud boom to my right and was met with the sight of a man in a ridiculous hat SHOOTING FRICKEN LIGHTNING FROM HIS HAND!

"Holy hell I'm definitely not in Kansas anymore!" I nearly screeched that out loud, and when a guy that barely speaks in the first place starts yelling his thoughts, you know he's scared out of his mind. Unfortunately screaming in the presence of a Lightning man that just used his powers to blow the roof of a house up whilst in the middle of a burning city isn't a smart idea for a few reasons. One; said lightning man that I've dubbed; Sparky Sparky Boom Man, noticed me. Two; Sparky Sparky Boom Man has friends… with axes… that are… covered in blood.

"aw crapbaskets." I muttered. Before panicking as Sparky Sparky Boom Man raised his hand towards me and weird rings appeared around him, I quickly dived to my right. Ow!
Note to self: diving head first onto cobblestone is painful. But not as painful as being in the way of that lightning that happened to make a crater where I used to be standing. Also, why the hell did I dive in FRONT of the market stall? You know, instead of BEHIND it for cover? I was now on the verge of hyperventilating, but I focused on staying as calm as I can.
If I'm gonna to die, I'm gonna go down fighting

Sparky Sparky Boom Man, was charging another blast and his friends where standing behind him just watching… that pissed me off a bit, but I can't do anything really. The weird rings appeared around Sparky Sparky Boom Man again, and I reacted. I grabbed something off the stall and threw it in what I hoped would be in the lightnings path but cringed as I realized the item was some type of container that blew open when I threw it dumping its contents. It seemed to be some kind of blue powder that lingered in the air as a cloud. It was hard to make out through the cloud, which I noticed was kinda sparkly, but I saw Sparky Sparky Boom Mans eyes widen just before blue, yellow, and green flooded my vision. Then came the pain, it was excruciating, I have been kicked in the nuts before. Doesn't compare to this. I feel like someone is squeezing and cutting my internal organs into shreds, then I heard a voice yelling something about an "end" and "come." I only had enough consciousness to recognize steel clashing against steel before darkness overtook me. I don't Know how long it had been, but I awoke feeling a strange warmth. It was comforting, yet foreign.

"Am I dead?" I muttered, as I slowly opened my eyes. "Not yet you're not!" My eyes snapped open at the perky voice wondering if it was who I thought I was. I looked at the face of my savior, and saw a young blonde girl hovering over my torso with a holding a stick with a gem attached to the end that rested on my abdomen. She had pigtails and bright blue eyes and wore a yellow dress. Yup there was no doubt, first the lightning, then I was healed with magic and now I was looking at Lissa the Princess of Ylisse… I'm in fire emblem… damn…

"I'm either dead or having a coma dream." I told her without breaking eye contact, she just raised her brow in response before helping me sit up. That was when I realized that I was sitting behind the stall I should have gone behind in the first place, curse you nerves. "You're lucky I was close by, that explosion would have killed you if I didn't heal you!" I raised my own brow at that, not because of what she said, that was true, but it was because they way she said it. She wanted me to praise her. I smirked and patted her head "Thanks, Blondie."

She pouted, and it was adorable.

"Well you better get out of here it's dangerous!"

"If it's so dangerous how would I get out of here without being in more danger?"

Wow even her confused face is cute. She's like a puppy.

"Okay fine just don't run off." She finally said, to which I responded with a two-finger salute. She turned around and peeked around the corner of the stall, I looked over the top. The first thing is saw was the scorch mark from the explosion I caused and the burnt-up corpse of Sparky Spa- uh, the mage.

I did that. I thought to myself, as I started to feel sick. No. survive now feel sorry later. I swallowed the lump in my throat and turned to what I can only assume is Chrom, fighting the two Axeman that were with the mage. Holy wow he was good! I didn't think he'd be so quick and- HE JUST DID THE HELM SPLITTER WHAT YOUR'RE NOT LINK! I controlled my voice before I yelled in amazement and just made it harder for him. And that's the last thing I want when he's the only thing between me and death by axe. Oh, two swordsmen just showed up… where the hell is Fredrick and Robin?

"Pick a god and pray!"

Thanks universe! Fredrick just rode in on his steed looking like the valiant Knight in every story ever and skewered one of the swordsmen.

"Chrom, help!"

Screw you universe!

Lissa's cry fell on deaf ears, can't blame him, galloping horse and steel on steel is quite loud. For some reason I decided to put myself between Lissa and the approaching Myrmidon. "What are you doing!" she screamed.

"Being a hero?" I meant that to sound cool, but it came out sounding more like a fearful question. But I pushed whatever fear I had aside, Lissa is important to this kingdom, or Halidom, and she plays a part in this story, I don't. I can't let her die. My hands curl into fists and I bend my knees slightly, I hear Lissa gasp softly behind me I ignore it and bring my fists up into a boxing stance. The swordsman is about to attack when I realize my right fist is glowing, why is it gl- fight now questions later!

I step into his downward swing and throw a quick left jab at his throat, he took a step back choking slightly, I took the opening and kicked him in the sternum, he fell onto his back. Huh, guess all those action movies and video games paid off, no wait, he recovered instantly by rolling backwards. We tech those apparently. He scowled before getting into a fighting position, guess he decided to take me somewhat seriously. From my peripheral vision I notice my right fist is still glowing, it's a deep blue. What ever that is its probably something strong, I can't miss a hit with that hand… which means I'm fighting one-handed until I get an opening. Wonderful.

The myrmidon let out a primal scream and went for a lunge, I turned sideways and slapped his hands up.
he released one hand from his blade and grabbed my throat, Crap! He was about to bring his blade down on me when from the corner of my eye, I see Lissa with her staff above her head and slams it down on the arm holding me. The man screams in pain as a loud crack is heard, damn Blondie is strong! The man's grip is nonexistent now and I saw a window that screamed; "Attack," so… I did… with my still-glowing right hand. My fist collided with his stomach, and as I made contact I felt many things, the first of which was some kind of warmth leaving my hand through my knuckles. The second was his ribs cracking, the third was an extreme feeling of success. And finally, I felt relief mixed with gratitude that Lissa was safe and that she helped me out… wait scratch that, the last thing I felt was an absurd amount of wind as the bandit went flying what had to be forty feet away and through a market stall before impacting on a Wall leaving a crater on its surface.

"HOLY CRAP WHAT!?" I screeched, as my eyes bulged out of their sockets at seeing the destruction I caused. That guy is dead no doubt about it, what am I Iron Fist or something? Well let's think about that later, right now however, I need to focus on not passing out. What ever that was it took its toll on me, I can barely move, and as the adrenalin died down I fell to my knees. Whatever that was… it was dope.
Oh there's the ground. Huh its getting closer. My descent was halted by a hand on my chest and I turned to look at the owner. Welp, there he was, Prince Chrom in all his glory.

"Are you alright?"

Dang. I want to trust the dude just from hearing his voice.

"I'm peachy, just totally exhausted from running and fighting all day."

"Well if your sense of humor is anything to go by you're fine," He said with a chuckle before he turned serious, "you saved my sisters life, I am in your debt."

This dude is nicer then 90% of the people of earth.

"Well," I started, "if you want to thank me you can do so by ending the Dastard that started this."

"you'll have to ask for something else, I'm afraid Fredrick already took care of that."

As if summoned from the gates of Knight hell Fredrick walked up to us lacking his steed, wonder where the old horse went. "Indeed, the bandit leader is dead, and his underlings have fled."

Hah that rhymed. My attention was drawn back to Chrom as he spoke, "What's your name friend?"

That made me hesitate, should I give my real name? I never liked it to be honest, and this is a good chance to start over, be who I want to be… it's settled.

"My name is Kail, and you are?" Chrom smiled before responding, "I'm Chrom, and this is my Knight Fredrick, and my little sister Lissa." I only nodded but internally I was patting myself on the back congratulating myself for not calling them by their names before they told me what they were.

"You don't introduce me? Chrom I'm hurt."

And there's the missing tactician magician. I was starting to worry. He was the male Robin, and he looked like the default model, except his eyes were a bright yellow. "Ah, right, forgive me." Chrom went to scratch the back of his head awkwardly, just like I do! Unfortunately, he used the hand that was keeping me up. There was a smack right before the resounding crack of my nose being broken. Or maybe it was dislocated I don't know, what I do know is that Fredrick spoke up.

"it seems Robin isn't the only one that's hurt."

Oh, wow Freddy actually made a joke nice! I decided to be sarcastic as per the norm and stayed face down on the stone as I gave a thumbs up.

"You're right Fredrick, I'm in excruciating pain right now! All thanks to Chrom!"

"Chrom, why'd you do that!?" cried Lissa in disbelief.

"It was an accident! I'm sorry!"

"You need to be more careful! If I wasn't here to heal him his nose would be done for!"

"It will be anyway if you don't heal me now, this hurts ya know!" my yell was muffled by the ground I was still practically kissing but judging by the argument ending with a small "eep" from Lissa, my cry was heard. Chrom helped me to my knees as Lissa when to work with a grumpy, "Try not to drop him this time." Chrom only sighed. I held back a chuckle and looked to Robin and saw that he was holding in laughter too.

"Sibling antics aside, I didn't catch your name yet."

"Oh yes, it's Robin, pleasure to meet you."

"Likewise."

"I am sorry Kail."

Jeez Chrom is really a nice guy, isn't he? "It's no problem, no harm done!"

Then there was sweet silence… except for the sound of my nose slowly being repaired.

Robin looked around as some of the villagers came running over with buckets of water and started fighting the fires, it was actually quite inspiring to see all the people banding together like that.

"Well that's the end of that…" Robin spoke as the villagers put out the last fire within our sight. Lissa also finished healing my facial destruction and smiled at Robin, "Yeah and lucky for the town, we were close by. But holy wow, Robin! Swords, sorcery, AND tactics! What's next Archery?"

"You're no helpless victim that's for sure." Chrom said with a smirk and I swear I can see him thinking of asking Robin to join the Shepherds.

"Indeed. Perhaps you might even be capable of an explanation for how you came here?" and there's the famed Fredrick the Wary, I wondered when I'd see you.

Robin scratched his shoulder and grimaced, "I can understand your caution, Sir Fredrick. And I cannot explain why only some knowledge has returned to me. But I promise you I've shared all that I know."

I basically tuned the rest out, it was just the script from the game except maybe worded a little differently. My thought drifted back to that punch I did, how the hell did that work? I don't have magic, so what was it… or… Holy crap. Did I actually give myself magic with that explosion? Was that blue powder Spirit Dust?

So, blowing someone up with Spirit Dust and lightning gives them magic fists…? I call bull. There must be more to that, but I can't figure it out for the life of me. I need to do research but how-

"KAIL!"

My infamous reflexes came into action and I quickly leapt from my kneeling position on to the stall we were still standing next to, I ended up perched on the edge like Spider-Man. Everyone stared at me in different ways. Robin looked impressed, Fredrick looked suspicious, Chrom looked surprised, and Lissa was failing to hold in laughter. I calmly got down from my higher ground and cleared my throat. "You will forget you saw that."

"Nope!"

I glared at Lissa, but she just laughed harder in response. Chrom shook his head, "What say you Kail?"

"Pardon? I was lost in thought what did you ask me?" I had a feeling I knew what it was.

"Would you like to join our group, the Shepherds?"

Would I? I wasn't sure. This fight, it was the smallest of the fights to come and I almost died how many times? And… and I killed someone. Two someone's technically. Did I want that? Chrom seemed to sense my conflict and spoke up.

"You don't have to answer right now. But even if you decline, you have talent in the magic arts," he turned to the chaos left in the wake of my punch. Yeah, I was gonna ask how he knew that, but I supposed that speaks for itself. "So please, even if you don't want to be a shepherd, come with us to Ylisstol and let our mages give you some instruction."

That seemed fair, even if I declined I would be in the capital. That should help me if I decide to go on my own. If not... well. I really don't know. But then there's the Risen...

"I'll accompany you to the capital… I-I'll give you my answer there."

Chrom seemed satisfied with that and nodded with a smile. Fredrick then turned to his liege, "Are you sure of this milord? Two strangers in one day is quite extreme, even for you."

"Fredrick, he Saved Lissa's life."

"As you wish milord." Fredrick nodded in response. "But did you notice? The brigands spoke with a Plegian accent."

Robin tilted his head like a puppy. No! bad Robin! Lissa's the puppy! "Plegian? What's that?"
Oh, you poor amnesiac fool.

"Plegia is Ylisse's westerly neighbor. They send small bands into our territory, hoping to instigate a war." Chrom answered generously.

"And it's the poor townsfolk who suffer! Totally innocent, and totally helpless..." You're innocent and helpless too but you're still fighting a war you brave blonde puppy.

"They do have us, milady: Shepherds to protect the sheep. Do not be swept up in your anger. It will cloud your judgment." First, why do you call your people sheep? Don't call them mindless animals that will follow blindly, they have feelings! Second, No. let the Hate flow through you... it will give you power… unlimited power!

"I know, I know... Don't worry. I'll get used to all this." Lissa, you're great but you don goofed, that sentence is gonna come back to bite you in a minute. Footsteps were heard running towards us and we all turned at the same time, like we had a hive mind, to a man dressed all in green. And a pot on his head… Donnel I found your Uncle.

"Milord, please! You must stay the night! We are simple folk of simple means, but we would gladly toast your valor with a feast!" god that sounds great to be honest. But Fredrick the party-pooper strikes for the first time in the time I've known him, and I dread the next.

"A most generous offer, sir, and no doubt your hospitality would be grand... But I'm afraid we must hurry back to Ylisstol."

Jerk.

"Dark meat only for me, medium well, and no salt in the soup. I simply— Wait, what?! We're not staying?! But, Frederick, it's nearly dark!" Okay why dark meat, and why are you watching your sodium intake. Actually, do they even know any elements beyond the classical four? Oh, I'm going to enjoy discovering plasma. Wait, no, I don't know if they have what's needed to do that… I'm going to assume they don't…

Oh, wait. Magic.

"And when night falls, we'll camp. Eat off the land, make our bed of twigs and the like... I believe you mentioned you would be 'getting used to this?'" And there you go Lissa, judgment strikes, watch what you say

"Frederick? Sometimes I hate you."

"Only sometimes?" I chip in.

Robin chuckled, "You've quite the stern lieutenant there."

Lissa started grumbling "Yeah, well, "stern" is one name for it. I can think of a few others!"

"Like stick in the mud?" now it was Lissa's turn to do the puppy head tilt, "Yeah that works I suppose"

"Frederick only smiles when he's about to bring down the axe." Chrom chuckled

I snorted, and Robin nodded grimly, "Duly noted."

Frederick cleared his throat… loudly. Like jeez we're two feet away from you not two miles. "You do realize I AM still present? He grumbled

Chrom smirked, "Oh, we realize." Robin chuckled openly at Chrom's teasing

"Milord remains as amusing as ever. Now then, shall we be going?" Freddy is annoyed even if he's trying so hard to hide it. That's the one thing about being quiet. You learn typical body language really easy.

"All right, all right." Chrom relented with another chuckle, "Ready to go, you two? The capital isn't far." he looked towards Robin and me. That may be true but its going to be a long journey. But hey, at least I get to cross '(re)kill a zombie' off my bucket list.
