Bitter Irony

"Please don't go. Stay here with me. I promise I'll make you happy."

Silence.

"Please... if you go, I-I'll scream!"

He vanished only to reappear behind her.

"Sakura, thank you."

Thud. Everything went black.

--

She opened her eyes. The emerald green orbs were glassy. Tears threatened to fall, then again, it would have been masked by the flowing water.

She stood, fully clothed, under a small waterfall. The cold water tingled her entire body. Not that she mind, the cold slightly numbed the pain she felt.

Only slightly, but it was relief.

"Sasuke-kun," she muttered under her breath.

She closed her eyes again and raised her head, letting the waterfall hit her pale face directly. It flowed down from her pink locks to her small and fragile frame.

She was as fragile as her name. She was a fragile sakura flower drowning in the river.

Only the splashing water stifled the growing silence...

"Sasuke-kun."

...of her heart.

--

"Hey," the raven haired boy called out.

The pink haired kunoichi stood up from the stone bench (the stone bench) and smiled at him.

"Sakura," he whispered. His usual cold obsidian eyes softened with sadness as she came into full view.

The jade eyed girl noticed, but kept her smile.

"Sasuke-kun, what took you so long?" she asked softly.

Sasuke extended a hand to caress her face – an act he had been wanting to do for so long. He stopped midway and let his hand drop.

"Sakura," the young Uchiha repeated. "I'm sorry."

She turned abruptly and tilted her head up. She raised her hand to protect her eyes from the bright sun. It illuminated her, even passed through her. She glowed. She averted her eyes to look directly into his onyx eyes.

"I'm glad your back!" she said cheerfully.

Silence.

"Ne, I fulfilled my promise." She stood up. "I waited for you."

"Hn," Sasuke kept his eyes on the ground.

Silence.

"Don't go," he pleaded.

"Quite ironic, isn't it? Now we've switched roles."

The pink haired kunoichi turned and walked away.

"Sakura!" he called out.

She halted, turned around and smiled. "Sasuke-kun, thank you."

The scene was like that of the night he left. But now, she's the one leaving him. Sasuke mustered the courage to say those words. The words he failed to say last time.

"I love you."

Sakura ran to him and took him in a slow embrace.

"I love you too."

Then everything went black.

--

Uchiha Sasuke woke up sweating. He clenched his sheets tight. His dark eyes traveled around the room and lingered on a picture frame.

He stood up and walked towards it. His finger caressed the face in the middle.

Green eyes.

Pink hair.

"Sakura..."

--

He dressed up rather hurriedly and went out to the streets of Konoha. His aimless wandering led him to the same bench he had dreamt of.

A frown stained his features. With clenched, bleeding fist, he walked away.

--

Sasuke stared down, tears forming in his eyes. He trembled and bit his lip. His long fingers traced the engraving on the stone slab.

In the loving memory of Haruno Sakura.

--

"Ne, I fulfilled my promise. I waited for you."

But now it's time for me to go.
