Chapter 1: Unbarring Truths
Emma was sitting there on her bed waiting for her boyfriend Sean to call. She was reading a magazine when she heard a knock on her bedroom door."Come in," she said as she looked up to see who was at her door, it was her best friend Manny. A look of worry came on her face as she seen her troubled best friend, "What's wrong Manny?" she said looking at her closing the magazine she once was reading. Manny looked down at Emma and you can tell she was crying because her makeup was smeared, she took a deep breath and finally said,"I was beaten." Emma's eyes widened and stood up and hugged her shaking friend, "Can I please stay with you Emma?" Manny said, Emma replied "I'll ask my mom."
A week went by, and Manny was staying in the basement with Emma. She slowly but surely was telling her best friend what had happened and why she couldn't stay at home. At school she hid her bruises with long sleeve shirts and pretended that everything was fine, but it wasn't. She closed her locker door after Media Immersion class and felt someone touch her shoulder and she was quick to jump, it was J.T who was always so chipper to see his friend. "You okay Manny?" he asked looking at her smiling, she rolled her eyes scuffing at him, "Fine dweeb", she said jokingly at him. He followed her to their next class and kept asking her stupid questions.
Emma who was now in Math class was wondering what happened the night Manny came to her door crying, she hasn't seen the bruises she can only go by what she's been telling her. She wrote a note to Manny when she was supposed to be paying attention the note said the following: Dear Manny: I am curious about what exactly went down the night you came to my house asking to stay. I know it's going to be hard for you to tell me but I think maybe you should go to Mrs.Sauve, she can help you a lot more then I can. Well Mr.Armstrong is onto me so I'll talk to you later. Your friend, Emma. She quickly folded her note and put it in her bag so he wouldn't find it. Luckily the bell rang just in time, she was happy the bell rang so she can give the note to Manny.
Manny was running through the halls as she clashed into a person she didn't want to. She picked up the books and looked up and saw Paige,her worst enemy. "Sorry Paige," she said standing up ready to leave her sight, "you better be Hun." a rude reply from the queen bitch of Degrassi halls. She ran to her locker and put her books away and got ready to go to English class with Mrs.Kawn. Emma came by her and smiled at her giving her the note she wrote the period before, and they walked all the way to English.
Right before English had ended Emma and Manny were passing notes back in forth smiling at eachother, they did that until Manny heard her name being called "Manny" said Mrs.Kawn looking roughly at her. "What is this?" she said grabbing the note from her unfolding it ready to read Manny spoke up "Please Mrs. Kawn don't read it please." She said looking up at her begging for her not to read her secret. Mrs. Kawn looked at her smiling, shaking her head and went in front of the class with the note in her hands, Manny looked at Emma with almost tears in her eyes not wanting her to unveil the truth that she's been hiding.
