"Never Leave Your Heart Alone"

An Alex/Izzie Fanfiction

Author's Note: The song I make reference to is "Never Leave Your Heart Alone" by Butterfly Boucher. Also, I don't own Grey's or any of the characters, as much as I wish I did.

The one thing that Alex Karev was sure of was that he never wanted to fall in love. He wanted women, but only if he could say goodbye to them the morning after and never see them again. As long as there was no possibility of feelings or love or baggage, he would be just fine with his one-night stands. He'd seen up close what thinking someone loved you could do to a person. His mother believed that his father loved her, and she loved him, so she wouldn't leave after he started hitting her. Alex knew that he never wanted anything that remotely resembled that kind of trap.

But then came Izzie.

When Alex started his surgical internship at Seattle Grace, he figured that he didn't have to worry anymore. He'd be incredibly busy, not to mention that all the women he would meet would be too focused on their careers to want anything from him. So he let his guard down.

He was wrong. Isobel Stevens walked into his life and it was as if rockets had gone off. Her presence was impossible to ignore, and, unfortunately, within the first few conversations that he had with her, she did the unthinkable, the inexplicable. She captured his heart fully and completely.

Their first date was awful because he was too distracted because he had failed his boards. But he knew he had more than made up for it when he kissed her at Joe's a few nights later. Inevitably, they started having sex. Well, trying to have sex. He just couldn't get it up. And then the sky fell. Izzie walked in on him having sex with Olivia. He shouldn't have cared. He ordinarily wouldn't have cared, but the look in her eyes upon seeing them was one that Alex knew he would never be able to forget. All he wanted to do was make things right again.

And he did, multiple times, in the linen closet during the Code Black. But then came Denny Duquette, the sick heart patient who managed to get the full attention and love of Izzie. Alex sat around wondering why he had been kicked to the curb in favor of a living time bomb. But mostly, he wondered what the hell had happened to himself. He wondered that again in the moments after Denny's death and the weeks following as he watched Izzie grieve, and he wondered some more when he found out that Izzie had slept with George of all people.

He figured that a song he once heard was right. "Never leave your heart alone." Because when you do, you never know who's going to find it…and break it.
