It was Fitz's birthday.
The rest of the team were lounging in the bar upstairs, joking around and giving Fitz various gifts they had picked up during their travels. He was so excited, just like a kid. Living together on the BUS every day, with only each other to keep them company…well, they were like a family. May smiled to herself. She hadn't bought him a present per-say, but she had volunteered to make him a birthday cake, because, well, she could make a mean chocolate sponge when she wanted to. And, despite everything that was going on in their schedules, Coulson still felt like they should do something to celebrate, so here they were. It almost felt…normal. For the moment, she was happy, and that was a rare thing nowadays.
The timer beeped, rousing her from her thoughts, and as she turned it off and retrieved her creation from the oven, she heard someone enter the room behind her.
"Smells amazing" Coulson said.
She felt herself blush slightly as she placed the chocolate cake on a stand to cool, then out of the corner of her eye she watched him as he gradually meandered around the room towards the mixing bowl. She knew what he was going to do before he'd even done it.
"Don't lick the spoon Phil!"
He scowled slightly, then shrugged his shoulders, smirked at her, and licked it anyway.
"You are such a child!"
"What? I'm helping" he said playfully. "You know, helping to…clear up."
She looked at him and rolled her eyes.
"You want to help? You can get me the icing sugar out of that cupboard?"
"Yes, ma'am".
May turned away again, pretty sure he was going to continue eating the leftover mixture. She started to melt some chocolate in a bowl above a pan of boiling water, but suddenly there was a crash from behind her, and she whirled round in time to see half the contents of the cupboard above Coulson fall out on top of him. The box of icing sugar hit the floor and exploded into a plume of sugary dust, completely covering him in a white cloud.
"Well….shit" he muttered, with a look of complete shock on his face. The icing sugar had completely cloaked him. It was on his clothes, in his hair, all over his face.
May tried to restrain herself, she really did, but a giggle escaped her lips, and then another, and suddenly she was laughing harder than she had in months.
"This. Is. Not. Funny" Coulson growled at her, but she knew he was fighting hard not to laugh too, and sure enough, a few seconds later he broke, and the two of them just stood there in hysterics.
"I mean honestly!" he said. "Ask me to take down a robotic psychopath? No problem. Fight alongside an Asgardian warrior? Sure thing. But get some icing sugar out of a cupboard? Nope, no can do, not me". He looked at May across the kitchen with a dopey grin. "So, right now I feel like the most hopeless agent in the whole of S.H.I.E.L.D."
She slowly walked over to him.
"Yeah, you are" she said, smiling up at him. "But you know what Phil? It's adorable."
And with that she leant in to him, and gently pressed her lips against his own. He wound his sugary arms around her waist, and drew her closer to him, and kissed her until she had to pull away for breath.
He looked down into her eyes. "God Mel, I've wanted to do that for so long now, you have no idea." His eyes glinted mischievously. "But I never knew it would be so…sweet."
She punched him gently on the arm.
"Idiot."
And with that she kissed him again.
