Jade was terrified. It was the middle of the night, and she could hear her mother screaming, and the sound of something that sounded like a body hitting something. There she lay under the blankets, shaking and wishing this wasn't happening. She heard the sound of footsteps walking up the steps, and suddenly the door opened. It was her mother. "Jade, lock the door." She did as her mother said, not asking why. "Does the lock stay?" her mom asked again
"No." Jade replied, still scared
"Help me move this in front of the door." she said, pointing to the bedside table.
She helped her mother move it, and her mom tested the door to see if it would hold.
"Close the door after me, lock it, and put the table in front of it. And no matter what, don't open this door." she said, slipping out into the hall.
Jade did as she was told, locking the door and putting the table back into place in front of it. She got back in bed, and tried to get some sleep, but was terrified about what might happen if he came upstairs and tried to force the door open.
He was strong, he could force it open easily. But apparently luck was on her side, for the door remained undisturbed all night long.

It wasn't until the next morning that she learned that her father had tried to get into the room next to hers, where her mother was sleeping.
