Admittedly not my best work, but I did write it when I was 10, so I think It could have been a lot worse.

Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling and Warner Brothers do.

Lily Potter stared out at the rain pounding the windows of the Hogwarts Express, and wondered, for the millionth time, what Hogwarts would actually be like. She had tried and tried, but, having nothing to go by except for her brothers' descriptions, which were not very long (or accurate, Lily suspected), she been unsuccessful.

The compartment door slammed, and Lily looked up, startled. Her cousin, Hugo Weasley stood there, soaking wet.

"What happened to you?" asked Lily, attempting to stifle a laugh.

"That boy, Scorpius," said Hugo as he searched his trunk for dry robes. "you know, in Rose's year."

Lily nodded wisely, "I heard Dad and Uncle Ron talking about him earlier, apparently his dad and our parents hated each other when they were at school. I bet his dad put him up to it."

"Yeah," said Hugo, looking much happier now that he was in dry clothing. "yeah, that'd make sense. Hey, what house d'you reckon we'll be in?"

The rest of the train ride passed in a flurry of chatter about various things the two cousins had heard about Hogwarts from their siblings. When the train pulled into the station, everyone grabbed their belongings, and the older children flocked to the horseless carriages while the first years waited nervously in a huddle with Hagrid, the Care of Magical Creatures teacher. A tiny fleet of boats arrived and everyone got in, four to a boat, and they were carried silently over the surface of the dark water

The lake might have been beautiful, but it was nothing compared to the castle itself. Full of towers and turrets, with a light twinkling behind each window. Lily, however, saw none of it. All she could think about was the sorting ceremony. Both of her brothers had spent many hours agonizing over it, but Lily hadn't really spared much thought or worry until now. She knew that her parents wouldn't care what house she was in, but the rest of her family certainly would. What if she were put in Slytherin? Her family probably wouldn't ever even look at her again. Very faintly, as though she were underwater, she heard, 'Potter, Lily', called across the hall. Legs trembling, she stumbled forward, vaguely wondering where she might stay if the unthinkable happened. Lily dropped onto the stool, and, just before the Sorting Hat slid over her eyes, saw Al, James, and Rose, smiling expectantly up at her. In that moment, Lily knew that, no matter where she was sorted, her family would always be her family, and nothing a mere hat could say would change that. But this knowledge still didn't stop Lily from whispering to the Sorting Hat, like so many others before her, 'Not Slytherin, please not Slytherin..." Because, you know, the Sorting Hat really does take your choice into account.

A bit cheesy, but I was only 10.
