Warnings: I spit upon ep. 0! Because I CAN!
Author's Notes: I was on a short-short kick and trying to come up with a Trowa x Catharine fic that wouldn't squick me and my friends out. I'm not squicked...
DNA
There was a soft noise behind her, soft enough that at first she wasn't certain she'd heard it. Curious, she turned. He was standing about three feet away, almost close enough to touch her if he only stretched out his arm. She smiled. "Trowa! Don't sneak up on people like that!"
"Sorry." His voice is calm as always, but there's a slight disturbance behind the surface of his eyes, like an undercurrent in the green of a river. It had taken her quite awhile to be able to spot those disturbances, and she was still trying to figure out exactly how to handle them.
She decided to ignore this one, for now. "So," she said, turning back to her soup. No reason to let it burn, after all. "Where have you been?"
"DNA testing."
"Eh?" She blinked, turning to look at him again. He still looked the same, completely at ease except for that look. "For what?"
"I wanted to see if we were really siblings, so I took some of the clippings from the last time you cut your hair and went to get a test done."
"And?"
He looked away for a moment, reaching into his pocket to remove two, carefully folded pieces of paper. He smoothed them out, then handed them to her. "We aren't."
Soup forgotten, she reached out one trembling hand and took the papers. She didn't know much about DNA testing, but one glance at the radically different patterns etched in bars across the sheets confirmed his story. No siblings would have DNA that different. Something in the back of her throat closed up. Without even meaning to, she closed her fists around the evidence. "I see. I...I don't care!" Tears started to puddle in the pale blue of her eyes, threatening to spill over at the edges. "You'll always be my little brother, Trowa! Always!"
Another disturbance joined the first, rippling out from the iris to the eye white. There was a brief pause. "I was afraid you'd say that."
"A...afraid? Why?" She stared at him, uncomprehending. He'd been her little brother for years now, almost a decade. He'd never seemed unhappy with their relationship.
He looked at her, bangs shifting a bit so that one half of his face was completely obscured. Another hesitation, then, "I want something different." Before she could form a reply, he leaned forward and gently pressed his lips against hers.
Her fingers loosened sporadically, allowing the crumpled DNA tests to flutter to the ground. Her eyes blinked rapidly as her brain tried to internalize the current situation. It didn't have much luck, even when Trowa pulled away, smiling softly at her shock.
"At least think about it. Please." With those words he turned and walked from the trailer, heading for the main tents with his usual grace, as if nothing in the world had changed.
