Running
Tess smiles.
Inside she's screaming, wishes she was anywhere but here.
That she was running through the woods, instead of messing up her performance.
That's her big secret.
She loves running.
When she runs, she focuses on her feet. She loves her feet.
They are scarred,
Battered,
Torn.
They are the feet of a ballerina, broken toes and all.
They are not perfect. Tess hates perfection.
That's why she loves Jason.
When Tess talks to Jason, he understands.
He doesn't feel like he needs to be perfect.
He believes he's perfect in his own way.
He can ask Shane Grey, THE Shane Grey, to build him a birdhouse.
He can laugh and smile and frown and cry.
He can be silly, and dense, and can only see good in everyone.
Which is why when he looks at Tess, he sees her.
Not a stylist or a hairdresser or make-up artist's greatest work.
He sees the girl who loves running.
Who loves the jeans that are two sizes too big and
the worn out black tee-shirt that's a billion years old.
The girl who wears no make-up on weekends.
The girl whose insides are as broken as her feet,
Who believes nobody will love her for her.
Who won't ask anybody to join her for fear of being left alone.
So when she takes off her heels tonight,
And challenges him to a race,
