It was Halloween. The day to fight evil spirits. And two great wizard and witch had fought against the evil which cost their lives. But ultimately she won. They won. They were successful in protecting their son.
Remus Lupin stood outside the hollow Godric's Hollow. As aurors and ministers rushed past him he couldn't help but think how the marauders in one of their many discussions about the magical world's dark era had firmly vowed to fight for the good. It was James and Sirius who were most determined. And now, one of them is murdered by the other to strengthen the dark era.
It was too much. James and Lily dead, it was impossible. Lily's laugh was still jingling in his ears. Lily, sweet and kind Lily-who stood beside him during his hardest time, who even after knowing about his lycanthropy accepted him as her friend not because of sympathy, but because of love, was dead. Gone forever. No one remained for him to remind his birthday, to fight along with him with James and Sirius. James and Sirius.
Sirius.
How could he?
Didn't his voice choked when he gave Voldemort the key to the Fidelius charm? James was his brother, Dammit! They were inseparable. How could he plot this whole plan against James without drowning himself in tears? How could he hide his true intentions from everyone for almost 10 years? If Remus's heart was bursting in pain thinking of the betrayal, James must've already died knowing about his betrayal.
James.
Prongs.
The boy who taught him to be proud of himself even in the most embarrassing situation. James brought his hidden qualities under lime-light nurturing which he became a prefect one day and was considered as one of the respected students in Hogwarts. James was with him when he almost murdered someone in his werewolf form. James saved him and the sufferer, him from fatal remorse and the sufferer from his bite.
But even as he saw the Godric's Hollow gradually getting empty, somewhere he felt proud. Proud that he had the fortune to know James and Lily-two brave wizard and witch who gave up their life for love.
And their son remains as the epitome of their sacrifice.
Harry.
The first time he met Harry at 's James proudly showed him how curiously his son resembled him. Remus had laughed and had wished aloud that hopefully he won't inherit his father's arrogance. When Harry opened his eyes only to reveal Lily's James had screamed like a girl. Sirius and Remus had made sure not to let James forget about his girly scream ever.
No, he shouldn't waste much time. He has to prepare for burial arrangements of James and Lily. His best friend. His family.
From this day onwards he was orphaned like Harry. As much as he desperately wanted it, he couldn't keep Harry with him. Firstly, Sirius was Harry's godfather. And even If Remus took Harry in, he didn't want Harry to feel miserable about his werewolf guardian and blame his parents for that. Harry's parents who gave up their lives for him.
As hazy strings of thoughts passed in the mind of Remus Lupin, he saw Hagrid scoop up Harry in his lap and start the motorbike which once Harry's godfather had bought along with his father to satisfy their whims. Now Harry is going to have his first bike ride without his father to cheer, his mother to panic, or his godfather to whistle. Like him, Harry was no one's, forever alone.
Gradually, Remus Lupin gathered himself. He wiped his almost dried-tears and set off for his arrangements. Before departing for funeral arrangements, he saw Hagrid gradually disappear in the horizon. He heard himself say, "Maybe your mom and dad aren't here for you, but you will always have uncle Remus who will wish with all his heart a safe and successful journey, even if you don't hear me."
