After Leslie died, things changed for Jesse. He stopped drawing, he was never happy, and he paid more attention to May Belle. He always went to Terabithia after school. One day, Jesse strolled into Terabithia with a bottle of water and all of a sudden he heard a giant boom. He knew it was just some angry ogres. But what were they upset about? Nothing bad had happened that he knew about. He had to help them with their problem. Jesse ran toward the noise and saw trees crashing down everywhere. Franticly, he crouched down to cover he head as he crawled to the ogres. "What is going on?" he screamed in his loudest voice. "YOU KILL LESLIE!" they said all at once as they swung tree trunks toward Jesse. The ogres thought Jesse killed Leslie so he could rule Terabithia. That was not the case in reality. He missed Leslie. He loved Leslie. He wished he died instead of Leslie. If Leslie ever came back to life, he'd date her and eventually marry her. This was no time to think of the impossible. It was a do or die moment he had to either defeat the ogres and save Terabithia, convince the ogres of his love of Leslie and save Terabithia, or run out of the woods to save his life and forget all about Terabithia. The best decision was to convince the ogres, but that could risk his life. The risk could be terrifying so what was really the best decision? He decided to convince the ogres. He started by calming them down. Once they stopped thrashing around, he offered some of his water. None of them accepted the kind offer. But one asked if he had any snacks. Jesse said no. The ogre got angry again. The others told him to calm down and that they would have dinner soon.(hint:Jesse) What was Jesse going to say? "Guys, I swear I didn't kill Leslie. I love her. And to prove it, I'll go get my sketch book and show you the last drawing I did. It was the day she died. If I could die for her I would. But unfortunately, I can't bring her back to life and then die. I'm not magic." "Go get the book now." The biggest ogre said. Jesse ran out of the woods towards his house. He ran in his room where he saw May Belle reading her favorite book: Little Woman. He jerked out the book from under his pillow and ran back outside. As soon as he reached the destination of the ogres, he flipped open his pad and showed the picture. It was a portrait of Leslie and a hundred hearts around her. He wrote above that "Wish it was me and not you". "Maybe he didn't kill her." they said. He finally got them to believe him and he left Terabithia in peace. And so did the ogres only they stayed in the woods.
The End
