JD shivered in Buck's arms as the fireworks started and then began to cry. "What's wrong, son?" Buck asked.

"They too loud?" Chris called.

Vin watched his brother in concern. As another firework exploded, he suddenly understood. Chris put him down; Vin immediately ran over to JD. Buck knelt, releasing JD. The brothers hugged.

Buck's eyes misted at Vin's declaration. "It's okay, JD. You don't have to be scared any more. Those ain't guns. We're safe now. We're free."

The fathers swept their children into their arms and held them tightly. Love, safety, and freedom were what independence was all about.
