The pups were inside the lookout, role playing after watching the new episode of Gravity Fall. Everyone were in costume, they even had Everest and Tracker over, catching Tracker up on all the episodes he missed. They were reenacting the episode, "Not What He Seems", and other of sorts until Marshall and Tracker stop.
"Huh?", both said turning to the door.
"Dang it guys, you broke character.", Rocky said walking over to them. "Huh?", Rocky said as he stopped too.
"Guys what's wron-"
"Shhhh.", all three said putting their paws over their mouths. The lifted their ears and tuned them twords a sound.
"Do you all hear something", Chase said walking over to them. He heard it as he got closer to the door. "What's that noise?"
They all proceeded to the door and they heard it to. "Tracker what is that?" Skye asked.
"No lo sé. Let me see, or hear.", Tracker tuned his ears until he picked the sound up clearly. "Entiendo, I got it. It sounds like breathing coming from down stairs. It really heavy too.", Tracker informed.
"Could it be Ryder.", Marshall asked getting worried.
"I'm sure it's nothing. I mean he was fine this morning and all afternoon so far. He is probably just tired.", Chase said. He saw the look on Marshall's face. It was one of concern as he eyed the elevator. "Do you want to go check Marshall?", he said making sure his best freind didn't worry. Marshall nodded. He and the other pups advanced to the elevator and rode it down to the bottom level. They all walked out and over to a couch where Ryder was sitting on it.
"Ryder are you okay?" Marshall said jumping up putting his front paws on Ryder's knees. Ryder ran his hand through the fur on Marshall's head.
"Yeah, I'm okay. Katie told me I should be doing some more exercise, and I just did some laps around the tower. I'm just tired. Nothing to worry about.", he assured.
"See Marshall I told you, nothing to worry", Chase said smiling. "Come on let's finish our game.", he said walking twords the elevator with the others.
"I'll come in a minute I, have to get something from outside.", Marshall smiled.
"Okay make come up as soon as you can.", Rocky said as the elevator rose. When they left Marshall got into Ryder's lap, out of concern for their leader.
"Where is Marshall. He should be up by now.", Everest said.
"I don't know. It shouldn't be taking this long.", Rubble added. As he said that, the elevator descended to the bottom level and returned with Marshall. He stepped out kicking something back into the elevator ascended he doors closed.
They all noticed that his eyes were bloodshot and he had snot trickling down his nose.
"Mawshall what's wong(wrong)? Awe you okay?", Zuma said.
"Have you been crying, and where is your costume.", Skye asked. They all waited for an awnser.
"My allergies were acting up and Ryder was giving me my medicine. And the medicine makes you-", Marshall paused for a yawn. "-tired. I'm going to go to sleep.", he said as he walked out the room and into Ryder's.
"Okay. I hope you feel better soon.", Chase said. When Marshall was out of sight be began talking again. "Okay, so we are all in agreement that Marshall dosen't have allergies?"
"I would say yes, but he has probably never told us about them.", Rocky said.
"Nope, I've known Marshall the longest and he has never shown any signs of allergies.", Chase denied.
"Could it be a food allergy, or something he touched?", Everest asked.
"Possibly, but he had the same thing from breakfast and lunch yesterday so it can't be that, maybe from something he touched, but I'm still skeptical.", Chase argued.
"But, why would Marshall need to lie to us?", Skye asked.
"I don't know. Let's ask Ryder?", Chase suggested. They walked back over to the elevator and opened the doors, but saw something.
"Marshall's medical gear. Why would he need that", Rocky said picking it up.
"This is getting very suspicious. Why would he have that. We weren't called on a mission.", Chase pondered the solution of the mysterious at hand. Like the detective he was he needed more clues. "Rocky, Everest, and me let's go talk to Marshall, the rest of you talk to Ryder and ask him questions." They all nodded and went their separate ways.
Chase and his group walked to Ryder's bed room and heard noises coming from the inside. "Is that crying?", Everest asked. "Why would he be crying?"
"I don't know, let's go in.", Chase said. Rocky opened the door and they walked inside the room. Chase's nostrils were hit with a very strong smell of salt. They walked over to the bed and found Marshall sleeping.
"Marshall we know you're not sleeping.", Rocky said getting on the bed. Marshall continued to sleep.
"Why was your medical gear and EMT pack, in the elevator?", Chase asked. Marshall eyes shot opened.
"I was using it to, umm, examine a cat, that got loose from Katie's store. Yeah. When I went outside I saw a cat coming to the lookout and Katie was chasing after it. Katie then twisted her ankle and I bandaged her up.", Marshall said smiling.
"Okay, one. If so why didn't you just leave it in your pup-house, or put it back up? Two, you said it was a cat now it's Katie's ankle.", Chase said staring directly into the dalmatian's eyes. If dogs could sweat, Marshall face would be a raging rapid of it.
"Marshall tell us what's going on?", said Everest.
"No!"
"Excuse me!", Chase said.
"I said no!", Marshall stood up asserting himself as his tone became more serious.
"Marshall, you know I hate playing this card.", Chase sighed. "As second in command, of PAW Patrol and technically your superior, I order you to tell me what were you doing with PAW Patrol equipment unsupervised!", Chase said standing directly in front of him. Rocky and Everest backed up in case a fight broke out.
"Can't you take a hint. I said NO!", Marshall yelled making Chase flinched. Everyone could sense it. The tone in Marshall's voice. It wasn't anger. It was hurt, sadness. Marshall began crying. "I want to tell you Chase, but I can't. I promised that I wouldn't tell anyone. So just, leave me alone.", Marshall said crying into his paws. Rocky and Everest comforted him, as did Chase but was hesitant to do so as he thought about what just happened.
Meanwhile
Group 2 went down the elevator when the others left. They rode it down to where they last saw Ryder. The stepped out the elevator and Ryder seemed to have a lot on his mind. He didn't even notice his pups coming down.
"Wyder", Zuma said in concern for their owner.
"Ryder?", Rubble said coming closer to his feet.
"Ryder!", Tracker raised his voice higher than the others.
"RYDER!", Skye shouted.
"Huh, oh hey guys what's up.", Ryder said shaking a little.
"We wanted to talk to you about Marshall. He said his allergies were acting up and we wanted to know what they were?", Skye said calming down.
"Why didn't you ask him?", Ryder responded.
"Because cha-", Rubble was interupted by a paw over his mouth.
"Because he said he was tired. Muy cansado", Tracker said taking his paw off Rubble's mouth.
"Oh umm, he's allergic to cotton. And his costume had some in it, so I took it off and gave him some medications.", Ryder said standing up.
"Okay that's explains that. But why did he have his medical pack on?", Zuma asked making Ryder stop.
"Umm, a cat fell from a tree and I asked him to check it out.", Ryder responded with droplets of sweat forming on his forehead. They all seemed to calm down until his pup pad rang. "Ryder here."
"Ryder it's Marshall, we have to tell them. They deserve to know."
"But-", Ryder was cut off.
"If you don't tell them now, it could be too late to tell them ever!", Marshall shouted making everyone gasp. Ryder sighed.
"Fine, get the others and tell them to come here.", Ryder caved.
Marshall and Ryder sat on the couch faced by the other PAW Patrolers as they awaited their awnser.
"Okay where do I start.", Marshall said trying to figure out how to tell them. "You all know how I belonged to Ryder years before PAW Patrol right?"
"Yes.", Rocky respondd.
"The reason I was adopted by Ryder's parents, is because of his brother.", Marshall said. All the other pups eyes widened.
"Ryder had a brother!?", Chase said.
"Yes his name was Ryan", Marshall said. Ryder held his silence. "They got me because Ryan wanted a playmate, and Ryder was too young for him to play with. On top of that, Ryan was coming to his, last leg", Marshall began to tear up. Marshall felt a hand on his back.
"What does that mean?", Skye asked worried.
"He was starting to feel ill and doctors diagnosed him with some illnesses with a long name I can't pronounce. Doctors gave him until 11 to live. Ryder has that same illness. I had my pup pack because I was checking him up. He dosent have much longer. He told me not to tell anyone, even though I was against it, I promised him I wouldn't tell", Marshall was in full on tears. Everyone had either fainted, or was still shocked about what they just heard. The ones who were still up ran over to Ryder and hugged him. They hugged for minutes maybe even hours without letting go.
"Beeeeeeeep", the machine sounded. The doctors detached him from the heart moniter and left Ryder in the room with his pups, and his freinds. They all either cried or surrounded the bed with their now lost companion. Chase of course superceded the postion of leader, with Marshall close behind, but he didn't care. Their owner was gone, their best freind was gone. They all knew this day was coming, but did it all matter. The lived their lives like nothing was wrong, they never thought that this could happen. Well, you know what they say, "you don't know what you got, until it's gone."
