Olivia sighed as she slid into her car. You'd think she'd get a day off once in awhile. She drove without looking back, heading toward yet another gruesome crime scene. "It'd be nice to get a break here and there, huh El?" she said, then realized she was talking to herself. It was going to be a long day.
She arrived just as the EMTs were covering the body with a sheet. "Warner, what have we got?" Olivia said. M.E. Warner turned toward her. "You're not gonna believe this," she began, "but this woman's uterus was ripped out with some sort of machinery."
"Wow," Olivia replied. "We have an ID on the body?"
Warner shook her head. "Jane Doe," she responded.
Olivia sighed. Another day, another nameless victim. She began investigating a nearby alleyway when she heard a strange whirring noise. She looked around the corner and saw a thin man dressed in a long trench coat pointing a strange object with a blue light at the ground. "NYPD! Drop your weapon!" she yelled.
"Oi!" the man responded, "Do you have to point that gun at me?"
Olivia gave him a strange look. He spoke with a British accent. He was clearly a long way from home.
"Do you mind explaining what you're doing here?" she began, "this is a crime scene."
The man half-smiled and replied, "Well, yeah, I sort of… gathered that. I'm just, you know, passing through."
Olivia was puzzled. She encountered many strange characters on a daily basis, but rarely did anyone dare to speak so flippantly to her. "Do you mind showing me some identification, sir?"
"Oh, yes," he said, pulling out a wallet and flashing it to her, "there you go."
She gave him a cold look. "This paper is blank," she said. "Stop playing games."
The man began laughing. "Oh, you're good. Brilliant."
Olivia had had enough. "Alright, if you don't have anything else to say, we're going down to the station."
The man smiled "Oh, yeah, this is usually when that happens…I'm not under arrest yet, am I?"
"Don't count your blessings too soon," Olivia responded. For some strange reason, she had to suppress the urge to smile.
