It was a lonely, silent night on Bannerman Road, and it was unusually quiet. Sarah Jane was sitting in her attic, relaxing after just disabling another NASA space probe. It was getting lonely now, Clyde and Rani were growing up. If she would see them, she would only see them roughly about once or twice in a whole month. They were getting old, going their separate ways. Sarah Jane sighed once more as she opened her dusty old journal, and flicked through the crinkled pages, looking back at all her documented accounts of her adventures. The Slitheen, the Gorgon, the Dalek Invasion of 2008, the Mona Lisa...she recently documented them, because she thought if she documented them, it'd feel less lonely, like Luke, Maria, Clyde and Rani were all there, like it was only yesterday, like it was just another day detonating a bomb from a reckless Slitheen..
"Mr Smith, I need you." muttered Sarah Jane.
There was the sound of the familiar fanfare and a low voice echoed through the attic.
"Good evening, Sarah Jane," the Xylok replied in its usual monotone. "Do you require assistance?"
"No, I just need you," sighed Sarah Jane. "With you here, I feel less alone."
"Should I attempt to contact the Doctor, Sarah Jane? Maybe he could help."
"I don't think anybody can help me now, not ever. Not even Luke, or K9..." Sarah Jane sighed.
"I've been scanning you for the last twenty four hours," Sarah Jane looked up. "the cell is mutating, and it's getting worse. I feel its escape is unenviable, Sarah Jane."
Sarah Jane sighed sadly; it could only mean one thing. She would be losing Luke, Clyde and Rani forever. She would never see her robot dog again, the one who looked after her and kept her company for all those years she was alone. Nowadays, she would be lucky if she even got a phone call from her son, Luke, who is in his final year at Oxford. It felt like yesterday he was leaving.
"Thank you, Mr Smith, let me know if there's anything else," sighed Sarah Jane. "Night."
It was a slow, quiet night. Sarah Jane slowly drifted off into a deep sleep, her treasured photo of the Bannerman Road gang beaming down at her, like it was just a day away since it happened. It felt like yesterday she was dropped off at Aberdeen by the Doctor. If only she could see him again, and tell him everything. If only she could say thank you for giving her such a good life. But it was too late, Sarah Jane was still, lying there without a trace, she was motionless, she had breathed her last, and she had never got that final chance...that final opportunity to say thank you to Luke for giving her life back, to Rani and Clyde, for having a family of her own..Sarah Jane was gone.
The whooshing noise of the TARDIS echoed through the silent bedroom, the vibrant blue box was materialising into reality. The man she once loved stepped out of the TARDIS. He stood there, gazing at the lifeless body, it was too late for her now. He couldn't save her from this. It was inevitable, even for the Doctor. It was a fixed moment that couldn't be rewritten. His Sarah Jane was gone, floating away into the night; he wished he could have had a final moment with her.
"Goodbye, my Sarah Jane."
The doors closed and the TARDIS engines echoed through the night. It was silent once more.
