AUTHOR'S NOTE: This is something I felt would be fitting, since I became a fan of "The Adventures of Superman" TV series (the one from the 1950's). I was not much of a Superman fan until the late 1990's, or early 2000's. Up until then, I was only familiar with Superman/Clark Kent, and Lois Lane. I had no idea of a character named Jimmy Olsen until AFTER I created Julie and Tommy. But because I found this out, I figured, what the heck? I'll write a story! Also, please forgive the somewhat corny dialog. The only version of Superman I know well is the above mentioned 1951 "Adventures of Superman" starring the late George Reeves. And in any case, for all intents and purposes for this story, Julie and Tommy are Jimmy Olsen's niece and nephew.
It was a beautiful day in Ponyland. Megan and Bow Tie were sorting through Bow Tie's hair ribbons, when Medley flew down, with Julie and Tommy on her back. Tommy jumped off Medley, and ran directly for his cousin.
"Megan, Megan, Megan!" he cried out happily, running straight into the twelve-year-old girl.
"Oof!" Megan shouted, pretending to be knocked off balance by her six-year-old cousin. "Hi, Tommy! Hi, Julie!"
"Hi Megan!" Julie shouted excitedly. "Hi, Bow Tie! Guess what Tommy and I got in the mail today!"
"What?" Bow Tie asked.
"A letter from Uncle Jimmy!" Tommy shouted, jumping up and down. "He lives where Superman lives! And Uncle Jimmy knows Superman personally! Uncle Jimmy is Superman's best friend!"
"Is he really?" Bow Tie asked.
"Well, maybe not really," Julie said. "But he friends with Superman. Here, I'll read you guys the letter. Dear Julie and Tommy, how are you? Things are pretty much the same here in Metropolis. There was a bank robbery last Thursday, and the person who tried to rob it had a machine gun. Luckily, Superman arrived or else there would have been trouble. The person fired the machine gun at Superman, but as always, the bullets bounced off him."
"Why do they always do that?" Tommy asked. "Don't they know bullets can't hurt Superman?"
"I don't know," Bow Tie said. "Go on, Julie, what else does the letter say?"
"Let's see . . . ." Julie said, trying to find where she left off. "Oh, here it is. Mr. Kent wrote the story after the robbery. After that, nothing much has happened around town. All the crooks are starting to know better than to mess with Superman! Anyway, how are you and your 'little pony friends' getting along?"
"Julie, you told him about us?!" Medley asked, shocked.
"No," Julie said. "Little Big Mouth over here did last time we talked to him on the phone."
Tommy looked up at his sister and stuck his tongue out at her.
"I don't think Uncle Jimmy believed us," Tommy said. "He just said 'oh sure.' And that was it."
"Then I heard him tell somebody that Tommy and I have great imaginations," Julie said. Then she continued reading her uncle's letter. "I hope Mr. White will give me a vacation soon. Then maybe I can come over and meet the 'little ponies.' Say hi to your mom and dad for me. Love, Uncle Jimmy."
"Your uncle sounds really nice," Medley said. "Is he your uncle, too, Megan?"
"Nope," Megan said. "My dad and Julie's and Tommy's mom are brother and sister."
"Uncle John is older than Mom is," Tommy said. "Uncle Jimmy is Dad's baby brother."
"Oh I see," Bow Tie said. "Well, next time you see your uncle, give him my best."
"We will, Bow Tie," Julie said. "Even if Uncle Jimmy just pretends."
Julie put her uncle's letter in her pocket, and went inside the Estate with Megan, Bow Tie, and Tommy. They found Cupcake and Gingerbread in the kitchen baking cookies, and Danny and Surprise were at the table, eating them. Tommy climbed onto a chair, grabbed a cookie from the plate in the center of the table, and wolfed it down.
"Hi Danny," he said, grabbing more cookies and shoving them into his mouth.
"Great," Danny said. "Like he needs anymore sugar."
"Guess what we got in the mail?" Tommy asked.
"I give up, what?" Danny asked.
"Is it a surprise?" Surprise asked. "I love surprises!"
"We know," Bow Tie, Cupcake, and Gingerbread said in unison.
"We got a letter from Uncle Jimmy," Tommy said.
"The Uncle Jimmy that lives in Metropolis and knows Superman?" Cupcake asked.
"Yeah, their Uncle Jimmy the liar," Danny said.
"Uncle Jimmy is not a liar!" Julie shouted, indignantly.
"Sure he is," Danny said. "I bet he doesn't really know Superman!"
"He does too! He wrote to us and told us all about it!"
"Your uncle is a reporter! He's supposed to write about Superman! It's his job! He doesn't really know Superman personally. I bet he's seen him around, but never talked to him."
"Yes he has! Superman has even saved Uncle Jimmy's life more than once!"
"Then how come he doesn't know who Superman is?"
"Because Superman has a secret identity and he won't tell anyone who he really is, silly!" Tommy shouted. "If everyone knew who Superman was, it wouldn't be safe anymore!"
"Besides, Uncle Jimmy's a blabbermouth," Julie said, shrugging. "That must be where Tommy gets it from."
"I'm telling Mom you said that!" Tommy shouted.
"Typical brotherly-sisterly love," Cupcake whispered to Gingerbread.
"I still say your uncle's a liar," Danny said. "He doesn't know Superman."
"He does too!" Julie shouted, stomping her foot. "And I'll prove it!"
With that, Julie stormed out of the Estate. Danny just shrugged, and grabbed another cookie before Tommy could scarf them all down.
Julie walked around outside the Estate for awhile. She didn't necessarily want to ask Medley to fly her down to Metropolis. She knew the green Pegasus would say no, and that it was too dangerous. And she didn't necessarily want to bring this up with Firefly, either. As she was thinking about it, she looked up and saw Twilight flying in the air (Twilight the purple So Soft Pegasus, for those keeping score).
"Hi, Julie!" Twilight shouted, as she flew down.
"Hi," Julie said. "Twilight, do you think you can do me a favor?"
"It depends on the favor."
"I need you to fly me to Metropolis."
"Isn't that where your uncle lives? The one that knows Superman?"
"Yeah. Danny doesn't believe that Uncle Jimmy knows Superman, and I want to prove it to him. I thought Uncle Jimmy could tell Danny himself that he knows Superman, but I have to go down to Metropolis first."
"Well . . . . okay. Hop on."
Julie smiled, and climbed onto the purple Pegasus's back. Twilight flapped her wings, and began to fly over the rainbow.
"Onward to Metropolis!" she shouted.
