Entwined

The sky… it is so beautiful

A thousand stars, crying out from the sky

I hear their cries, but make no move

For I know I'll soon be with them

Days have passed… dreams have faded

But we're still here somehow

It won't be long before departure

Ours, a ceaseless journey to the moon

We wait for the dawn

Yet fear for the daybreak

Where we must leave this all behind

Forget the countless memories

Live the end at long last

Taste the bitter sweet breeze

Feel the sun's rays

See the inevitable, peacefully coming in

Catching the scent of a new day

Sending us off, the planet forsakes us

Nothing to hold us back

We'll soon be gone

And we'll be entwined

He lifts his arms to the sky, shaking and trembling like a leaf in the stormy air. Magic he never before had dared to use, playing at his fingertips. Again, unable to reach that which is so far off, but so hauntingly close as his life draws to an end.

It's the inevitable, he knows. But that doesn't mean he won't regret it.

Cries from so many fill his ears. He makes no move.

If it must take a sacrifice, then so shall he be.

Above him lies the ocean, the barren, treacherous land, then the open sky, filled no doubt with stars uncountable. He casts aside the memories shared with so many of them, under those same stars. Different times, different places, but always the same sky.

He closes his eyes, letting the blinding light overtake him.

He is surprised to hear the sound of rain, wanting it to wash over him, to take away the sting of death, but he knows it won't help.

Slowly, he fades away, without a thought.

"CRONO!"

She screams.

She wakes up, alone and afraid, with a weight against her chest. Her hair, unceremoniously mussed and floating around her round face, tangled within the soft string of her pendant. The stone shines bright once, catching a falling tear. She takes it up in her hand and presses it close.

If nothing else, she wants to have this one part of him.
