Some Games Will Never Die
"Come on! Come on!" said Ally, pressing one of the buttons on the X Box controller she had in her hands. Ditto was beside her, watching her.
"You almost got him!" said the small alien excitedly. "Quick! Jump to that platform!"
Rachel, coming down with some folded laundry, heard their excitement and looked in, smiling.
"Ah, I see you found my Sonic Generations game," she said. "That one's my favorite. What level are you on?"
"The second Boss Gate. We're trying to defeat the water monster," said Ally.
"Ah, Perfect Chaos," said Rachel. "I had some trouble getting past that level for a while too. The trick is to jump to the platforms quickly before the monster blasts them to pieces."
Taking that advice, Ally managed to get Sonic to do that and she beat Perfect Chaos. "Yes!" she cheered. "Okay, your turn, Ditto."
Ditto took the controller. "Do you want the old Sonic or new Sonic?" he asked her.
"New Sonic," she said.
"Okay then," he said and chose the old Sonic to play the next zone.
"How many rings have you two gathered?" asked Rachel.
"A lot. Why?" asked Ally.
"Well, one great thing about this game is that if you get enough rings, you can play the old Sonic the Hedgehog game that came out for the SEGA Genesis. That game is a challenge."
"Really?" asked Ditto. "Have you beaten it?"
Rachel shook her head. "I haven't been able to get past the third act of the third zone," she said with a smile. "See how many rings you have so that you can play the game and maybe beat it."
"That is so cool that this game has the old and new combined!" said Ally.
Rachel smiled again. "That was one of the reasons I bought it," she said. "Plus, Sonic is one of my very best favorite characters. I doubt people will ever get bored with him."
Smiling, Ally and Ditto returned to their game, helping each other out by spotting the enemies and bashing them and collecting as many rings as they could. Rachel was about to head off to finish the chores when Ally suddenly spoke up.
"Hey, Rach? Have you ever beaten this game?" she asked curiously.
Rachel grinned. "It took a while, but yes, I have beaten Sonic Generations before," she said. "Try to see if you can too."
Well, that made both the eleven-year-old girl and the small alien excited to try and see if they could beat the game too.
Chuckling, Rachel went back to the chores, smiling as she fondly remembered the days when she was younger and playing Sonic the Hedgehog on her SEGA Genesis. It was packed away up in the attic for safe keeping, but she still had the games she used to play with it and how much fun it was.
"Not many people remember the SEGA Genesis console," she said to herself. "One of the first gaming consoles to introduce video gaming to the world and started a whole new trend."
Smiling, she decided that one day, she'd pull out that console and show her family, but for right now, she decided to just let Ally and Ditto have their fun with her X Box 360 with a character that was just as much of a legend today as he was so long ago.
