The only sounds to be heard were that of the crickets chirping and the breeze rustling through the trees. It was just after sundown, and the twilight was fading fast. It was the time of day when the people in the rural village either were in bed or already asleep. Most of the people did just that, but not everyone.
There was something special about this village. In all other ways, the village was normal. Kids played in the meadow, farmers tended their fields. Mothers looked after their kids. Nothing special about those people; it was the teenagers who were different. On that warm summer's evening, with the twilight fading fast, one by one the village's teenagers appeared outside their front doors.
Moving as one, the young men and women looked to the skies and took a deep breath of the cool night air. Opening their eyes, they all grinned in excitement, as well as in anticipation. One teen, a young woman around 19 years of age, began to sing a haunting melody as she stood on her front porch. The fireflies that had been floating around her home suddenly scattered on the wind, each racing to the four corners of the village. One by one, fireflies landed on the palms of the village teens, and one by one, each teen was swallowed by a bright flash of light.
The girl slowly stopped singing as she too was swallowed by the light. Then, just as quickly as it had come, it was gone. The twilit sky was the only light remaining and, one by one, formerly human teenagers opened their fairy-like wings and took to the skies. Soon the only ones still on the ground were the girl and a silver-haired boy that was standing next to her. With a shake of her head, as if she couldn't believe her eyes, and a mile wide grin, Kagome joined hands with Inuyasha and opened her own wings as they joined her fellow fairies in the night sky.
There was something special about this village. In all other ways, the village was normal. Kids played in the meadows, farmers tended the fields. Mothers looked after their kids. Nothing special about those people; it was the teenagers who were different. By day, they were normal, but by night, the teens of the village took to the skies in their real forms. Some places can claim to be the birthplace of a famous president or claim to have the world's largest rubber band ball, but there was only one village out there that could claim to have fairies living among them.
Author's Note: In this short story, Kagome discovered a curse had been set upon Kaede's village that forced the fairies among the villagers to hide their real forms. Kagome found a way around the enchantment, and now, she and Inuyasha are among the villagers that transform into fairies every night. Of course, none of the other villagers know of this, so it's their little secret.
Okay, just a bit of a drabble I came up with while standing on my porch last night just after sundown. Maybe not my best work, but it's the first fanfic I've been able to write in weeks. Enjoy! Please R & R, by the way!
PS. If anyone wants me to write another chapter as to maybe how Kagome came across the curse and how she and Inuyasha are able to join their winged friends in the skies despite not being born fairies, then please say so in your review.
