There is a boy.

Nothing is going to be the same, he thinks, and another piece of the puzzle slides from his fingers and into the pyramid in his hands. Eyes heavy with exhaustion, he wonders when it will all be finished, if ever, if it can.

If, really, any of it matters.

"A wish," his grandfather had said, pressing the gold box into his hands. "A wish. Granted to the one who can complete the puzzle."

Yugi had dreamed of a wish for too long not to be seduced by the promise of something so (beautiful, wonderful, dangerous) available.

There is a ghost.

He feels the tap of something like life on the outside of his domed conscious. Of his dreams and realities and nightmares that make up the web over his head and under his bed. Rough and old silk sheets have lost their sheen over the centuries, but there is an air of royalty to this chamber still.

Once, a king slept here.

Nameless, he wanders from room to room, chasing the shadows of memories and people around and around until -

- it all falls down.

"My boy," a woman whispers.

A wish, someone begs. Please, grant me my wish.

The ghost (the memory, the king, the figment) leans away from the dying woman and her astute husband in the corner. He pushes forward from his dome of thoughts and poorly made excuses for his laziness (there's so much dust, so many bad days) -

and he listens to a lonely boy.

Because there is a boy.

There really is.

Boy is hope. This boy is hope. A boy can be hope.

The spirit tries the different words out on his tongue. Speaking is hard. His throat feels as dusty and dry as his home.

Hello. And, My name is -

Only he can't say that one. He can't whisper his name because it's a secret to even himself.

"Yami," he decides, trying it out. Because he looks at his hands and finds them dark. His clothes are dark. His eyes are dark. The shadow he is -

it is all dark.

"I'm Yugi," he says. And the spirit drinks his name in as his own. Put it away. Makes it part of himself.

"Yami," he says. "My name is Yami."

My name is all shadows. But you can see me and be with me if you want.

Because I need you.
