He had always been friends with Eli- Elizaveta. But he- she- had always thought of him as annoying.

And suddenly, he didn't want to be annoying anymore. He wanted Elizaveta to be able to trust him and not feel awkward telling him stuff. He felt like such an idiot when he pulled that trick, only to find out his best friend wasn't a guy at all.

And damn, for being a girl, Elizaveta could fight harder than just about any guy he had seen, excluding himself of course. But that made her stand out so much more in his mind.

Then again, there was that stupid oath he was forced to take when he became the country of the Knights. He wasn't even supposed to really hang out with girls, let alone have feelings for them or-

No. He did not have feelings for Eli!

Yes. He did. And they were for Elizaveta, not Eli. Eli was just a name Eliza was using so she could act like a boy. She had to know she wasn't actually a guy. How could she not know?

Then again, how did one develop feelings for their best friend almost overnight?

He thought of it as something that would pass and tried to play down every moment he was with her. He acted just as brash and 'annoying' as she thought he was.

But no one is perfect, no matter how awesome they are. He had slipped up.

She had been talking to him about some battle where she almost kicked Turkey's butt, but ended up losing because her reinforcements didn't show up on time. He listened to every word, wondering where in the world he had been and why he hadn't gone to help her.

He grabbed at her wrists, careful not to touch her small hands.

"Li, if you are ever going into battle again, just freaking tell me. I'll be the backup you need anytime you're fighting that stupid Turkey, okay! I mean, that's what us Knights do! I promise it'll happen!" Her face had been a little shocked at the sudden willingness to fight Turkey on the young Knight's part. Her cheeks became red and eyes wide as he leaned in and kissed her, square on the lips. For a moment, the two sat like that, neither really understanding Gilbert's action. Finally, Liza pushed him away, spitting onto the ground.

"Ew! You are so gross! Boys don't kiss other boys idiot!" Gilbert blinked as he realized what he did before standing and turning.

"That wasn't a kiss, stupid. That's how promises are made in... Er... Italy I think. Ja! Boss said that's how Italian's seal the deal on promises, so they can't be broken!" He could hear Elizaveta shift behind him.

"Oh really... I didn't know you had ever been to Italy before," there was a smirk hidden in her voice.

"I haven't, but my Bruder has, und that's what he told Boss last time I saw him, so, those are the facts!"

"The facts, huh? Well then, you're going to be fighting in a lot of battles with me then, 'cause stupid Turkey doesn't want to leave me alone!"

"Fine, then, I will!" Gilbert turned around, stomping his foot slightly.

"You better not send some stupid new troops out either! Turkey is a really hard guy to beat!"

"I'm not dumb! I'll send the best unit of Knights I can!"

"Promise?"

"Promise!" She leaned forward, placing her lips on his cheek before turning and walking back towards her capital.

"You better go tell your boss, 'cause you just sealed a promise. And I know you're not one to break an oath!"

She left him red in the face and gawking slightly, but within moments, he had regained his composure, "You didn't seal the promise right!"
