Chapter 1

Travis's Perspective

I've been here since I was 8, Camp Half Blood that is. I had a much easier time coming here than most people. Usually they're being chased by massive herds of Greek monsters and led through the forests to camp by some wimpy satyr, but not me. My life was handed to me on a silver platter, except for the fact that I was a demigod of course. Ever since I was little, my mother had been annoyed with me, because I would sneak cookies from the jar on the kitchen counter, or take her keys from her and hide them somewhere so that she would have to bribe me to get them back, my brother would always help of course. Sometimes though, we would steal from other people. Generally we were quite successful thieves, but once in a while someone would catch us, and we would switch cities again. I guess she wasn't really the greatest example of why being a thief was bad, because she was one herself. But without a father at home to help pay the bills, she would have to get the money somehow, and she found pick pocketing and stealing things the easiest way. That's probably why my father, (the god of thieves and travelers) fell in love with her. But I didn't even know who my dad was yet. We had to run away quite frequently, since Connor and I were still quite inexperienced, and we didn't want to get caught by the cops.

Once, we stumbled into long island sound, my mother, brother and I were walking thought the forest when we saw a strawberry farm. We cheered at the sight of fresh food and my mother let us run ahead to go pick some strawberries. We carelessly bolted into the fields and began to shovel the biggest red ripe strawberries that I have ever seen into our mouths. As I reached over to grab another one, I saw a small shadow coming from behind. I knew that it was too late to hide and my mom still hadn't reached us yet so she couldn't think up a lie for me either. I decided that it would be best to look friendly, so I turned around and saw a young girl, about my age walking over to me. "Hi," I said, "what's your name?"

"Um, Katie... who are you?"

"The one and only, Travis Stoll!"

"Um, I've never seen you around before, who's your godly parent?"

"My whaa?" I said

" Oh, don't play games with me Travis, you obviously have a godly parent or you wouldn't be in here, and there's no way you could have just..."

"What?"

"Umm, how did you get here?"

I quickly told her how we had been wandering through the streets of long island sound and happened upon this strawberry patch.

"We're starving," I quickly told her "I'm sorry that we took them without asking, but just please don't arrest us."

"What? Aren't you a camper here?"

"Uh, I don't even know what here is."

"Oh no, we've got to get you and your brother to Chiron," she said urgently, "come quick."

"What about my mom?" I said.

"Your mom is here! And you didn't mention it this whole time!" she said, "She could be dead now for all we know, trapped outside camp borders with all those monsters!"

"WHAT! Monsters!" I trembled, "my mom always told us that monsters don't exist!"

She looked at me sympathetically "I'm sorry to crush your dreams, but they definitely do exist, I'm one to know," she said, looking off sadly into the distance. "Come on, let's hurry up and go get Chiron so that he can allow your mother to enter camp half blood. Then we'll explain everything." I was amazed at how serious this girl was, even at her young age! I guess fighting monsters will probably make me a serious person too... maybe not.
