"You've been a very bad boy, Norman!" She said with her back turned to him.

"I'm sorry, mother, but he was no good for you!" He said sternly.

"Don't talk back to me!" She yelled. "You did a very bad thing, Norman!"

"I didn't want to, but I had no choice, mother." He said softly as he sat down next to her. "I did it for you."

"Maybe it was good, but I'm watching you from now on." She said sternly.

"Yes, mother." he said.

"You wouldn't want to hurt you mother? Would you, Norman?" She asked.

"No, mother! I A boy's best friend is his mother." He said as he hugged her.

"I love you, Norman." She said as she layed down.

"I love you, mother." He said. "Now get your rest, you need it."

He took off the dress and folded it neatly at her feet. He quietly walked out and closed the door. He walked down the stairs. The house was finally quiet. No more reporters or policemen asking questions. He was free. Just him and mother. The quiet breeze around the house sounded peaceful. He opened the door and looked around outside.

The field was beautiful and the hotel was quiet. He walked down the steps and reached the hotel. He unlocked the door and stepped inside. The room was dark. The full moon provided some light, if not much. All the keys were in their places and there was very little money in the register. They had moved the highway last summer so business had taken a toll. There were less customers but prices had gone up. So it was more or less the same.

He walked into the parlor. He turned on the light and was greeted by the many birds he had stuffed himself. They all had a gentle, sympathetic look to them. He walked over to the table and grabbed his sack of candy corn. He had loved the candy since he was a small boy. He ate it almost regularly now. He took one last look around the room before he left.

He stood by the register and sat the sack of candy by it. He flipped the switch on the wall and he could see the bright letters reflect on the window in the moon light. He could read BATES MOTEL VACANCY backwards. He stood and waited. It was going to be another long night. He grabbed the sack and ate a piece of candy. He grinned.

"Open again." He said to himself.
