Aghast, James stared at Sirius in disbelief, not wanting to believe what he had just been told.
"Are- you're quite sure that- did you actually see them kissing?"
Sirius mournfully looked down at the ground, not wanting to look in his best friends face as he said this, "Yes. I saw Lily and Remus kissing. It was in broad daylight, so it couldn't have been anyone else."
Seeing his friends lip begin to quiver, Sirius pulled him into a hug (it was manly, don't judge!) and patted his back as James' shoulders began to shake with sobs.
"I-I just can't believe it. How could Remus do something like this to me? He's supposed to be my friend! A friend wouldn't do this to another friend," James sobbed, almost wailing the words out, some so chocked that Sirius had to strain his hearing to hear them.
Sirius sighed and soothingly patted his back, not wanting to say the obvious, that Lily and Remus had steadily been growing closer in the last few months and that James had been the only one who hadn't noticed it, and then only because he was so stubborn.
After a while, Sirius soothingly stroking James' back, he calmed a bit, looking up at Sirius with devastated eyes with a strange tint of hope. Sirius opened his mouth to say something, when the dormitory door burst open, and Remus came in, flushed with cold and a big grin on his face.
Wincing, Sirius prepared himself for a shouting match loud enough to bust his eardrums, when James surprised him by looking up at Remus, a shaky smile on his face, and said, "G-good f-for you. Guess I always knew you and Lily were meant for each other. I j-just didn't want to see it."
Remus looked stricken with guilt, while Sirius simply wore a shell-shocked expression, as the last thing he expected was for James to simply say it's okay. James stood up, aware that he was being watched with shocked expressions, mixed with guilt from Remus, and hesitantly patted Remus on the shoulder.
"I may not accept it right at once, but I know that I shouldn't be mad at you, so, just give me a few days, maybe weeks, and I'll be fine, I think."
So saying, he walked out of the dormitory, and though Sirius knew he probably wanted to be alone right now, he followed right on James' heel, calling after him.
"What the hell?" he asked, flabbergasted by James' mostly calm expression.
Smiling at him, James said gently, "I wasn't as hurt as I thought I'd be, when you told me, and I fell to wondering why…."
James was looking at him very intently, and, swallowing, Sirius asked in a small voice, very embarrassed at its high pitch, "what, what did you realise?"
Smiling softly, almost no sign of the broken-hearted boy who had been sobbing in Sirius' arms just a few minutes ago, James pulled him closer, and kissed him.
Looks like those hugs weren't quite so manly after all.
