"Ouch!" The little girl stumbled and landed with a hard thump on her back. Her big blue eyes teared up as she fought for breath.
"Kaoru! Are you okay?" A boy with a red bandana wrapped around his head ran up to her. "What happened?"
"I got knocked over." She sniffled a little more and wiped her tears away with the back of her grubby hands as she answered her brother.
"Well, you are a girl. Girls aren't supposed to play boy games." He told her superiorly. She glared up at him.
"I can too! Misao always plays with us." Kaoru said angrily.
"Yeah, well Misao looks more like a boy than you do." He replied. Kaoru didn't get to respond because another small boy came over to them.
"Are you okay Kaoru? I saw you fall over." His violet eyes were bright as they watched her.
"Yeah I'm okay. I just have some scrapes on my knees." She told him. He nodded. "I'm gonna go home and get a band aid." She got to her feet and walked down the road to her house.

A small figure was running in the direction of the group of boys roughhousing in the street.
"Kaoru!" A shocked voice came. Purple eyes were wide.
"Kaoru! What did you do?" Sano's mouth gaped open.
"You said that Misao looks more like a boy so it was okay that she played with you. So I made myself look more like a boy. I found the scissors in the kitchen drawer." She replied as though the answer was obvious.
"But why'd you have to cut…" Sano trailed off. "Mom's gonna kill me."
Kaoru's hair was roughly cut. Her ponytail was gone and in it's place was chin length hair looking quite ragged. It was obvious she had done it herself and all because her brother had made a dumb comment.
"Kaoru." She turned to look at Kenshin. "I liked your hair better the other way. You can always play with us no matter what you look like. Promise to grow it back?" He asked.
"Okay!" She said happily.
Sano just groaned he was going to get into so much trouble with his parents later when they saw what Kaoru had done to her hair.
