I'm back with a new fic. A nice(ish) Nick and Zoe story. It's only going to be short - a few parts but it's an idea that actually came from a dream which is just a bit weird. It's not at all related to my other story but I am writing a sequel for that soon(ish).
But anyways here it is. The first part of this story gives a summary of what's been happening as it's set two years from now. - I hope that's not too confusing!
Two years ago Nick had made probably one of the hardest decisions of his life. He had decided to stop the medication that was keeping his girlfriend Yvonne alive. The decision wasn't made alone, he had her mother with him but he still felt that he was the main contributor of the decision.
He had to keep himself together for the next hour or so. He had a patient in resus who needed his care. He succeeded until the patient had been dealt with, then he broke down. Sobbing into the arms of his ex who he now considered to be his best friend, he felt something. He felt a feeling of love but it was more than 'friendly' love. This wasn't what he wanted to feel. He'd just turned off his partners life support. With his emotions all over the place Nick decided to leave Holby.
He decided to move to the south coast. He'd always dreamed of a cottage by the sea. However, he went for an apartment by the sea. He'd secured a job at the local hospital and life was going okay. He had his good days and bad days. He missed Yvonne. Deep down he knew he had to move on. After nearly six months since Yvonne's passing he decided to write to Zoe. The pair of them had drifted apart and Nick really did miss his best friend.
On receiving the letter Zoe was having her own drama in Holby. She exchanged several phone calls with Nick and decided to move down to the coast with him. Just to help her start afresh.
Eighteen months later Nick and Zoe were in a relationship with a baby daughter named Ruby. This wasn't the way either of them had planned things. It just happened. Of course life wasn't perfect. Far from it. Nick had still been going for check-ups on his brain tumour. The last scans had confirmed his worst fear and he was given eighteen months to live. Nick retired from work to spend the remainder of his life with Zoe and Ruby – taking on the occasional research project, whilst Zoe worked part time.
The evening was drawing to a close that night. Nick and Zoe were sat on the sofa in the large open plan living room watching TV. Nick had a sleeping Ruby in his arms.
"You know it's two years ago today." Nick mumbled. "Two whole years…"
"I know sweetie." Zoe said taking his free hand and squeezing it.
Nick sighed.
"Zoe, I don't want you to go through what I did…"
"Nick, we've discussed this." Zoe said cutting him off. "I'll be fine."
Neither of them said anything. They just carried on watching the TV in silence until there was a knock at the door.
"I'll get it." Zoe said getting up.
She walked over to the door and opened it.
"Charlie?!" She exclaimed shocked. "What on earth are you doing here?"
I hope that wasn't too painful to read!
