30 Days of Ness

Holding Hands
{30 Day OTP Prompt Challenge : Day 1}
AU set sometime in the future for Ness.

Jess floated on the edge of a dreamless sleep, and though she was becoming increasingly aware of the fact that her body felt as though a truck had hit it, all of her senses were focusing on one single point of contact.

Tiny fingers wrapped around her own.

Her eyes focused on the little hand gripping so tightly. Little perfect fingernails, tiny little knuckles. Her gaze traveled over the curl of an elbow, so small, and over a round shoulder. At last, it rested on a delicate little face.

Her daughter.

She smiled, supremely satisfied.

"Hello there, Miss Miller," she said to the slumbering infant. "I thought the labor pains were making me hallucinate, but you're really here."

"She is really here. She's really here." A mostly awed but slightly panicked voice cut through Jess' reverie, and she looked over at her husband with a tired grin. She should have known that he'd already be panicking. Their little girl was only a few hours old, but Nick Miller was on the edge of a breakdown.

"Oh God." He covered his face in his hands. "I don't know if I can do this, Jess."

"Too late," she sang to him, and then she looked back down at the tiny baby on her chest.

They were still in the hospital, though Jess knew it wouldn't be long before they'd be headed home again. Nick continued to quietly freak out about being a dad in the chair beside her bed, and Jess lifted her free hand to run her finger down her daughter's cheek.

"She's perfect," Jess said. Nick stood and leaned over the pair, cupping his baby's tiny head in his hand for a moment. Jess felt her eyes fill with tears at the sight, and she turned her smile up to her husband.

"Hey Nick?"

"Yeah?" He was smiling down at her too, still looking a little in shock but happy…happier than she'd ever seen him before.

"You're going to be a great dad."

He leaned down and kissed her lips, then laced his fingers with hers around their daughter's tiny fingers.

"I love you, Jess Miller."

"I love you too…Daddy."
