1) Why We Named You Luke
"Lucas Charles Robert Jackson!"
The little boy turns around to face his father, a mischievous grin on his face. He knows he was in trouble, but he doesn't care. He makes the water around him go back into the river. His father stops in front of him and gives him a hard look. "What have I told you about playing with the Tiber?"
Luke frowns a little. "But you could control the water like that when you were little," he counters. "Uncle Frank and Auntie Hazel tell me the stories."
"Yeah, but I was a little older. You're still in the fourth grade."
"But Dad-"
"No 'buts'. Now where's Asha? The war games are about to start."
"Mroow."The call comes from inside the hood of Luke's hoodie. The little boy's gray eyes sparkle with glee as he sees his father's confused look. He reaches behind his head and sits a small yellow kitten on the grass between them. Wait… No, not a kitten. Asha had turned into a tiny lion cub. Luke's father puts on a scowl, but it soon turns into a wide smile. He couldn't stay mad at the kids, even if he tried. Between the two of them, they would probably bring New Rome down to her knees, with all the mischief they'd cause.
The lion cub sneezes and Asha now sits in its place. She beams up at the man, and he is struck once again of how much she looks like her mother. Asha has her mom's brown dark skin, her dad's almond-shaped black eyes, and a mixture of both parents hair: black with hundreds of thick ringlets. She says, "I'm a lion, Uncle Percy. RAAAAWWR!"
"Yes you were!" Percy tosses the little girl in the air and catches her. She squeals and laughs at the action. Luke looks on holding his sides laughing. His father stopped, carrying Asha on his hip. He ruffles his son's black hair before grabbing his hand. "Let's go home."
Later that night, Luke's mother tucked him into bed. Every night she tells told him a story, usually one of his parents' adventures. But every now and then Annabeth would read from her dads old history books. That would put him right to sleep. But tonight he seemed to stay up. "Mommy, where did you get my name from? Lucas, and Charles, and Robert"
His mother is thrown for a loop. She pauses, choosing her words wisely. "Your mommy and daddy had friends when we were younger. The first two were demigods. One was named Charles. The other was Luke. They, um… Passed on during the Titan War."
"We miss them a lot," Percy added. He'd he been standing in the doorway the entire time. Walking up to the bedside, he takes his wife's hand. Then, kissing it, he says, "We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for them."
"What were they like?"
Luke's father chuckled. "Well, Charles, we called him Beckondorf, was a Greek demigod, like us. A son of Hephaestus. Not as jittery as your Uncle Leo, but….. Well no one's as jittery as Leo. Beckondorf was a great fighter, but more than that an amazing friend. He was the first casualty in the Titan War."
"I knew Luke longer." Annabeth sighs, and kisses her husband's wedding band. "Luke was a son of Hermes. He was kind, brave, and compassionate. But he was led down the wrong path, let his anger control him. In the end, though, he saved us all. And we never will forget him because of it."
The couple squeezed each other's hand for the next part. The incident was years ago, but the memory was still vivid. Annabeth still had nightmares. Once, in the middle of training, Percy started attacking a demigod on probatio. He thought he was being attacked by an empousa. But most days they focused on the good things down that heel hole. "That name Robert came from one of our closest friends. More than once he saved our lives. Especially when your aunts and uncle needed us the most."
" What happened?"
"Well. That's a story for another time. Maybe when you're a little older."
But, what we can tell you," Annabeth put in quickly, "is that that man was brave. He had honor. When he could have hurt us, because of things we did, he choose to protect us and help us when he could. And for all the things we asked of him, he only asked for us to do one thing."
"What's that?" Luke was growing sleepier.
His mother smiled and whispered. "To say hello to the star's for him."
"Like this?" Luke pulled his arm out above the bed sheets. He sat up and rolled his sleeve up. On his skin was the most peculiar birthmark: the distinct seven-pointed star on the inside crook of his elbow. "Yeah buddy. We added Robert after you were born. We saw the birthmark and thought it was a sign. So that's why we named you Lucas Charles Jackson. Now go to sleep. You have school in the morning."
Within a few minutes after they finished, Luke passed out from sheer exhaustion. He and Asha must have run themselves to death. Percy and Annabeth retired to their own bedroom. "What if we had a girl?" Annabeth looked at her husband curiously.
"Bianca." He answers immediately. "Bianca has to be one of them."
"Selena, too."
"Let's not forget Zoe."
"Two middle names? Again?"
"Hey, we've dealt with much weirder."
"True." They settled back into the bed, before Percy started talking again. "Wait. Did Rachel ever find out what's wrong with you? I mean you were sick all morning."
Annabeth smiles. "We've got a bun in the oven." Her husband gives her a confused look. He stands and walks towards the door. He mutters. "I swore I turned the stove off."
She smiles knowing it would take a little bit for it to set in. "Percy, the stork is coming to visit."
"Why is Frank coming over? I thought he had a meeting with Reyna?"
The woman rolls her eyes and walks over to him. Getting on her tiptoes she kisses him. "Gods, Seaweed Brain. What are the three of us going to do with you?"
"Three?" Percy says. Then it sinks in. Stork…Bun… The three of us. Gods he was dense. Percy pulls way and looks her in the eye. "Annabeth are you….?"
She nods and Percy lets out a laugh. He lifts her in the air and twirls her around, yelling, "We're having another baby! Another baby!"
They hear their oldest stir down the hall, and they move into their own bedroom. Percy lays his wife down on the bed and raises her shirt. Kissing her stomach, he lays his head there, listening.
"Hi, Bianca Selena Zoe Jackson. This is your idiot father." Annabeth laughs. Percy nuzzles her stomach, saying. "Maybe you'll get lucky and have your mom's smarts. Or you could end up like me. It's a little complicated out here, but you'll be safe in New Rome. We love you and we can't wait to meet you."
His beautiful wife runs her hands through his black hair. Then he adds, thinking of his son earlier. "And I can't wait to tell you about the amazing women you were named for."
So this is my first Fanfic. Please, review. Constructive criticism is completely welcome. If this goes over well then I promise to write a Solangelo Fanfic. Thanks so much. Love ya'll!
