Faded Dawn

By: Under the stars

She watched the dark purple of night give way to the rosy tint of morning. Her eyes closed and she could breathe in the scent, smelling morning as it approached. Sometimes she would stay out here as long as she dared, wanting to feel the sun on her skin once more.

"Star."

His voice was soft, serrated like the edge of a butter knife on her skin. Star turned, seeing David standing there and watching her. His eyes glittered with secrets that she couldn't even decipher or get him to tell her. "You should come inside now."

"I will, soon." Star turned back to the sky watching. The little pale dots of stars were going away. The very things she was named after faded. Sometimes she felt like she was fading, too.

His boots crunched over the gravel as he walked towards her and pulled her to him. His grip was firm, possessive and normally she didn't mind. Lately though, Star was feeling suffocated. When she'd talked to Michael today at the fair she'd felt it even more.

Star felt their magic moment had passed and now she was David's again. Her body tensed only slightly, but enough for the man behind her to feel it. He narrowed his eyes, his fangs coming out slightly. "It's almost dawn."

"Let's go inside then." Star said as she turned and found herself in David's grip. She wanted him to know nothing was wrong when in fact everything was wrong. That she wished she was in another man's embrace.

It would never happen. She looked to the sky again, knowing that the fading colors of dawn at least would keep her secret.
