Note: I do not own The Hunger Games. This story is my first so don't

expect much. It's a short story.

The Girl in the Rain

Grey stormy clouds were gathering at District 12, signaling rain. Thunder rumbled in the distance as lightning danced across the sky. Peeta Mellark was in the Bakery's spotless kitchen decorating cakes(his specialtly!)when someone caught his eye. A girl, with a long braid, sea-green eyes and equipped with a bow and arrows was walking towards the bakery. By now, people living around this area would have been back at home, sitting round the small fire that was started by a few sticks of firewood, trying to keep warm. However, she had this hopeful look in her eyes that made him want to ask the reason for her walking towards the bakery. Soon, icy sheets of rain began to fall and her motive was clear. She was going to search the bins in hope of finding some food for her family. District 12 was a poor District and therefore, rarely had even enough food to feed a whole family for even a day. But with her bow and arrows, meant that she could hunt for wild animals. No one ever goes to the lush green forest teeming with animals behind the electrical fence for fear that they will get whipped or other gruesome punishments they will have to face as it was illegal to hunt here. But there were rumors once that some people do hunt in the forest and then sell their kill at the Hob, a market where you can sell anything. And Peeta was sure that the girl failed to kill any animals in the forest and she couldn't go home a failure so she hoped to find burned bread that were thrown to the bins. However, the bins were emptied early in the day and the bakery only burns bread once in a blue moon so there was nothing. The girl looked desperate to bring at least a crumb and when she saw there was nobody in the bakery, she went into the bakery and stole some loaves. I could see her eyes, the eyes of a hungry wolf who would do anything to get food. However, before she could walk back home and eat the loaves for dinner, Peeta's mother carrying a pink umbrella saw her and first, exchanged greetings but when she saw the girl carrying the freshly baked loaves she let out a string of expletives and slapped her in the face. His mother even threatened to report to the peacekeepers of the crime to get her punished. As much as Peeta wanted to defend her as a poor peasant desperate for food, it was not in his power. He could see now that the girl was on her knees pleading his mother to forgive her. When a boy with grey eyes, hazelnut brown hair and a muscular body stepped in front of her and defended her. Peeta felt a surge of jealousy but at the same time was thankful that someone helped defended her when he realized it was the boy which every girl liked. He could make a girl faint with happiness by just smiling at her. There were some others like him but not as popular with the girls. It seem like her mother noticed his features too and warned the girl not to steal anymore. After the girl was let go, the boy smirked at her and said "Isn't it right to thank me? I just saved you, Catnip." The girl hestitates for a while and thanks him but he asks for a piece of a bread and she tears it into half and gives him a slice. However, after the girl gives him the slice of loaf, he pulls her in and plants a kiss on her cheek. She was shocked. Her face turned a shade of red in anger but soon she just shrugged and a smile appeared on her face but it quickly disappeared. The boy had a coy smile on his face as he walked home. Soon the clouds cleared and the orange sun was set against pools of pink and orange clouds. The sunset was beautiful but Peeta knew the boy and girl had a special bond that would never break. The girl was Katniss Everdeen. The boy was Gale Hawthorne.
