Waiting for a sign

Summary: She is still waiting for him

Author's note: Vanessa Carlton, Rinse, Lyrics. Spoilers for the siege.

Elizabeth Weir watched the incoming tide with tired eyes. The ocean seemed to be her only friend lately, the calming waves soothing her tearing heart.

The people of Atlantis were shunning her, she had been demoted from Leader of Atlantis to another mere consultant, the newest members of the Air Force from Earth taking over command.

It had been like this since John Sheppard had died.

She sighed, remembering when John called out to her on the stairs of Atlantis, giving her his best 'I love you, but I have to do this' look as he told her what she already knew.

He was going on a suicide mission.

She'd do anything to sparkle in his eye
She would suffer, she would fight, and compromise
She's been wishin' on the stars that shine so bright
For answers to the questions that will haunt her tonight

She must rinse this all away
She can't hold him this way
She must rinse this all away
She can't love him this way

So things had gone downhill after that. The Wraith ship had been destroyed, but there was still the second one who self-destructed, taking half of Atlantis with it, and killing thousands of Atlantians.

And she was their scapegoat. Everything was her fault. People blamed her, turning their backs against her command. And all she could wish was the John Sheppard would come back to her, at least for one more hug or smile, to give her strength.

But he was gone and would never come back to her. And as everyday went by, it got a little bit harder. Apparently there was no light at the end of the tunnel.

How she'd be soothed, how she'd be saved if he could see
She needs to be held in his arms to be free
But everything happens for reasons that she will never understand
'til she knows the heart of a woman will never be found in the arms of a man

And if she runs away she fears she won't be followed
What could be the worse than leaving something behind
And as the depth of oceans slowly become shallow
It's loneliness she finds...
If only he was mine

So everyday she would walk to the place where they had shared many innocent moment together, just talking or giving each other support in troubled times, and she sat and waited. Waited for a sign that he was waiting for her. Waiting for a sign that he was coming back to her.

But none ever came.

And he never came back to her.

She'd do anything to sparkle in his eye
She would suffer, she would fight, and compromise
She's been wishin' on the stars that shine so bright
For answers to the questions that will haunt her tonight

So waiting in the usual spot, the balcony, watching the ocean and waiting, she was surprised when someone came to sit beside her.

Looking over, she saw it was Ford. He grinned and reached out, pulling her into his arms, where she broke into tears, the barriers broken as her emotion poured out.

Teyla and McKay soon joined them as they all sat, watched, and waited.

Waiting for a sign.

She must rinse him
She must rinse him
She can't rinse him
She can't rinse him
She can't, she won't, she must rinse him
She can't, she won't, she must rinse him
She must rinse this all away
She can't hold him this way
She must rinse this all away
She can't love him this way

And as she watched and waited with her friends for what she knew would be the last time, she knew, everything was going to be alright.

This was her sign.

The end
