PROLOGUE

Buffy and Angel sat on the opposite side of their son, Connor, each holding his hand. They have been married for the past 10 years and now things were taking a turn for the worst. Their only child, Connor, was diagnosed with leukemia four years ago and through years of chemotherapy and medications, he entered into remission a year ago. Now the cancer is back and the treatments have stopped working. Buffy looked at Angel with puffy red eyes and noticed the same expression in his features. Defeat. Their son was not going to make it this time. Angel squeezed Buffy's hands as more tears followed the ones that had already left their mark on her face. He felt helpless. He was supposed to protect his son and wife and he felt as if he failed. This was out of their control. Their son was slowly slipping away from them and Buffy was a major wreck.

"Mom? Dad?" Connor asked weakly.

"We're here, baby," Buffy replied. "Your father and I aren't going anywhere."

"Promise?" Connor asked unsure.

"We promise, son. You just get some rest." Angel replied.

Connor's eyes fluttered closed and he relaxed. As Angel looked over at his beautiful wife, he saw the heartbroken features on her face. He wanted to erase the pain from his wife and son. This time, he didn't know if his marriage would survive if his son didn't make. How am I going to survive if Connor doesn't make it? How will Buffy handle everything if Connor doesn't make it?
