Lois Wilkerson sat down to dinner with her family after a tiring day at work. Before she started to eat, though, she looked around the table at her sons and her husband, Hal. The only person missing was her oldest son, Francis, who was currently at military school. Her other sons were Reese, Malcolm, and Dewey. Lois loved all of them, but one really stood out to her. She couldn't help but feel just a little bit of favoritism toward him. He was a genius and he didn't get into loads of trouble like Reese and Francis did.

It was Malcolm. Lois tried not to show it, but he had always been her favorite. The reasons that she thought so highly of him was because Francis had been a troublemaker all throughout his childhood and early teen years. That is why Lois and Hal had to send him to military school. They didn't know what else to do. Reese was much like Francis. It seemed like trouble always followed him. Lois couldn't take Reese anywhere without having to deal with some kind of problem that he had caused. Then there was Dewey. He was a clever boy and he was her youngest son. Lois and Hal often overlooked him. Not on purpose, but because they were busy with other things.

Lois thought about how smart and intelligent Malcolm was. Looking at his report cards had always made her feel better after she had glanced at Reese's grades. As a mother, she thought that all of her children were amazing, though. It was just that she had very high hopes for Malcolm. She knew that his intelligence would take him far later in life.

All of a sudden, Hal's voice interrupted her thoughts. "Uhh...Honey? Are you alright? You've been staring off into space for awhile now." Lois shook her head and looked at her husband. "I'm fine. I've just been thinking." She glanced over at Malcolm, who was eating hungrily, and gave a small smile. Then, she picked up her fork and finally started to eat her dinner.
