The best thing about District Four had to be its beaches. They had white sand that was warm from the heat of the sun, but if you dug your toes underneath the white sand you would find that it was cool as the night. The water was a pristine aquamarine colour. Possibly one of the most unusual colours for an ocean, but the people of District Four weren't even sure if it was a real ocean any more, for all they knew it was something that the Capitol designed. They didn't care anymore though if it was real or if it was something manufactured. All they cared about was its beauty and how it sustained their way of life. There were so many bright coloured shells washed up on the shore that the children would pick up and collect or string into a necklace.
Annie Cresta was so glad that she lived in the most beautiful District possible.
"Annie! Stop your day dreaming already!" Finnick Odair yelled at her from across the beach. "We're all waiting for you!"
Annie rolled her eyes at Finnick and tore her gaze away from the beautiful ocean in front of her. "I'm coming Finnick, you don't have to yell at me. I'm not deaf."
"Coulda fooled me." Her Finnick snorted. Annie childishly stuck her tongue out at him before proceeding to elbow him in the ribs, or at least attempt to. Finnick dodged out of the way before her elbow came into contact with his skin though.
"OYE!" Annie's best friend Melody hollered. "If the two of you are done flirting yet, we'd like to start our game of beach volleyball!"
"I'm not flirting with her you moron Melody!" Finnick hollered back.
"Are you sure about that Finnick?" Annie questioned. "Of course I'd be totally fine if you were flirting with me, after all, who can resist my good looks and charms."
"Oh shut up Annie. That should be my line." Finnick said while shoving her playfully before running to the volleyball court.
Annie gazed at him for a minute before she followed suite and ran to the volleyball court for a prompt game with her friends.
Playing volleyball, gazing at the ocean, flirting with one of your best friends, lying in the sun and taking a nap, it was all so perfect. Being in the most perfect district only made it all the better.
That's what Annie thought at the time though. Unfortunately, her perfect world in the perfect district would be ruined before her very eyes. First her brother River would be reaped in the Hunger Games and she would have to watch him die on the screen. Then Finnick would be reaped just two years after her brother's death, but he would survive. But although he may have survived her would never be the same. He would jump at almost every slight noise; she would hear from his mother how it was important that she remained friends with him since he was spiraling in his own world of terror. What would shatter Annie's perfect world though, would be going into the Games herself and losing her grip on reality.
Her perfect world would spiral into a world of insanity in which she couldn't escape. Flickers of hope where she would be grounded, but it would slip through her fingers just as quickly.
Annie Cresta's perfect world would always just be out of reach.
