"The Immortals"

By: Katie Todd

"New Kid on the blocks been doing her homework" Gibbs smiled and enjoyed Kate's private one in return.

He had quizzed her on the names of the different Navy carriers the night before. The silver haired man heard her gentle laugh, saw her flushed cheeks and bright eyes, as he remembered the previous evening. He had taken a risk, gone against his normal character when he asked her over to his house. She was going to become the best she could be and he was determined to make her that, but that wasn't why he had her over, even if he covered the real reason by quizzing her preparing her for the job. He suspected he had done a pretty lousy job she had seemed to see directly past his 'I'm preparing you for the job pretense' to the real reason behind his invite.

He liked the sweater she was wearing, the dull black and gray was beautiful on her even if he liked her in bright colors better.

The silver haired man shared a secret smile to the woman at his right, his eyes gently portraying that he would immensely enjoy massaging the hand he knew had to be hurting. She had taken more notes in the last hour than he had ever taken in his life, and she had taken them BY HAND. She rubbed at the inside of her elbow and he struggled to pay attention to his favorite Goth.

He felt the warmth trickle off her as she leaned over his arm. He tapped a measuring strip above the mark he had asked her to look at. While continuing his work, he continued his argument. She was too set on her point. He argued gently with her about the boy being catholic. He could see in the depths of her eyes that this argument was based on a personal experience even if she didn't want to admit it. She had dealt with a suicide in a Catholic family. He excused himself to finish his conversation with Tony.

Gibbs was enjoying this far too much for his comfort. They had grabbed a lousy lunch and settled themselves in the office they'd been given for the week. Her feet had ended up on the side of his chair and his feet had ended up on the front of hers. They passed files back and forth and she gently complained about the number of people on board. He corrected her and managed to prevent his mouth from smiling at her for her chagrin. Enjoying, their gentle silences, the comfort of her feet against the outside of his thigh, the gentleness of her smile, he was in love and he didn't want to admit it. It was too early, way too early, to be doing this again. He had only known her for a little over a month and he was already smitten.

"I don't think it's that simple" she scolded Tony and Gibbs shot her a look.

She explained her statement and with his permission continued. It made sense.

"You ok" he slurred at her down turned smile.

The situation was obviously bothering her but he thought it more having to relive personal experiences than anything. He fought the urge to wrap his arms around her as they went to exit the room only to re enter and receive their 'presents'. He fought the images inside his head when Kate opened the bag and removed the item inside. He managed to joke and agreed with Kate's statement that she worked with pigs. He tossed the suit to the table for their captain to find. He was sure Kate didn't mind. She seemed at a loss on how to handle the situation, he had knowingly taken over. He didn't mind taking care of her, wanted to in fact, and that bothered him.
