Delphine handed Cosima the little black velvet box and she took it gently with great curiosity. She looked up at Delphine with questioning, "What is it?" She asked in a whisper.
"Open it," Delphine whispered back.
If you'd asked, neither of them would have known why they were whispering, maybe perhaps to keep the hushed, peaceful setting they'd fallen into.
Cosima looked down at the box in her hands and lifted the lid, inside there was necklace with a heart on it. An anatomically correct heart. Cosima beamed and gave a slight laugh, "It's perfect Delphine!" She exclaimed, wrapping her arms around Delphine's neck in a tight hug.
Delphine slid her arms around Cosima's waist and kissed her cheek.
"Can you put it on for me?" Cosima asked and she felt Delphine nod. They separated and Cosima lifted the necklace out of the box but as she did so a small folded piece of paper fell out, "Oops," Cosima mumbled and picked it up, skilfully opening it single handily she tried to read the beautifully crafted almost calligraphy handwriting but her French was not so good.
Delphine stepped closer and took the empty box and the paper and placed it on the cluttered table then she turned the necklace over in Cosima's hand so she could the engraved letter D. Cosima gasped softly, "You have my heart," Delphine said and Cosima looked up at her with watery eyes, "That is what the note says," She explained.
"Oh Delphine!" Cosima cried, literally, "Oh gosh, I'm tearing up," she stated, wiping her eyes, "That's beautiful," she said and Delphine took the necklace from her and put it around Cosima's neck.
Then Delphine tugged at the chain that was around her neck, freeing it from her clothes she showed Cosima an almost identical necklace but with the letter 'C' on the back. She smiled as she watched Cosima's delight.
Cosima didn't know what to say that wouldn't sound cheesy so instead she pulled Delphine into a heartfelt hug.
"Do you like it?" Delphine asked.
"Of course!" Cosima answered quickly, "Oh gosh I'm crying," Cosima said, pulling back with a sniff and wiping her eyes, "Why am I crying? I'm happy I shouldn't be crying, " She prattled on.
Delphine watched the spectacle with a smile on her face the whole time, "In my scientific opinion Cosima I would say that the increase in oestrogen in your system would be what is making you feel extra emotional," Delphine said, placing her hand on Cosima's slightly rounded stomach as Cosima placed her hands on Delphine's.
