"One, two, three, four."
"Adrian?"
".five, six."
"Adrian, come on."
".seven, eight, show some patience, Sharona, ok? Nine, ten, eleven, twelve. Perfect." Sharona blew an exasperated breath between her teeth. "Are ya done yet?" Adrian smiled. "Alllllmost.. there. You can look now." Sharona dropped her hands, then gasped. A wooden replica of a carousel rested on the table before her. Twelve candles sat in holders around the base. Each candle produced a tiny flame, which in turn, created a little burst of heat, enough to spin the wooden fan blades above carousel, setting the little horses in motion. "Happy birthday. I know you like riding the carousel, and since you like candles too."
"Adrian, it's beautiful! Where'd you find it, when'd you find it? You never leave the house without me!" Adrian shrugged a shoulder, slightly embarrassed. "Actually, they were advertising it on television." Sharona's jaw opened slightly. "You were watching the Home Shopping Network!" It was a statement, not a question. Adrian clasped his hands. "Well, yeah. there just, well, there isn't always a lot to watch late at night." He fiddled with the candles again, making sure they were straight. "Adrian Monk, I never would have pictured you watching the shopping channel." Adrian held up his hands. "Now wait just a minute, I never said I was a fan!" Sharona laughed at his quick denial. "It's alright." She said, leaning in close to whisper. "I won't tell a soul." Adrian cleared his throat. "Do you want your birthday cake or not?" Sharona gasped again. "You baked?" He grinned. "Well, Benjy helped a little." Sharona smiled. "So that's why he was on the phone for an hour. He swore it was friend Danny." While she spoke, Adrian disappeared into the kitchen, reappearing moments later bearing a one-layer cake adorned with thick chocolate frosting. "And sprinkles!" Once the cake was on the table, Adrian fastidiously wiped a smear of chocolate off his thumb. "Well, make a wish." Sharona glanced at her boss, her eyes suddenly sad. Then, closing her eyes, she blew out the single candle. "Want some?" Adrian sat, crossing his arms. "No, you go ahead." Sharona's eyes narrowed. "This is my birthday, and on my birthday, you eat." The steel in her gaze allowed no argument.
An hour later, after the dishes had been washed, Sharona and Adrian sat in his living room, quietly watching the carousel spin. "Thank you." Adrian glanced up at her soft voice. "I know it isn't the best gift." She stopped him with a look. "Adrian, it is the best gift, because it came from you." He put a hand to his lips, a gentle smile claiming his features. "I, what I want to say is." Adrian breathed out suddenly. "You want some more cake?"
