"Might as well kill two birds with one stone," he said, then, turning to Enjolras, he added gently
I walked across the room to him. From what I could see, the battle was over. I had missed everything. I was furious with myself. I should have fought by him! I stood by his side. If we hadn't fought together, we would die together! I wouldn't let him die alone. Besides, I was ashamed that I had not been on the barricade with him.
"If you don't mind."
I wasn't sure though. I had to look up at him, to ask if he would allow me, the one he held in contempt, to die beside him. He was brave. He was dying a hero's death. He might not want to have it dishonored by a drunken fool. So I had to ask him if it was all right. And... he took my hand. He said I could die with him! He smiled at me.
Enjolras smiled and clasped his hand.
Me. The one he'd always told to go away. The one he'd always told had no purpose. He once told me I was incapable of believing! I believe in him, though; I will always believe in him. I was so afraid he'd tell me to leave him alone, to just go back to my corner table and let them shoot me later. But he didn't. He took my hand.
The smile had not left his face when the volley rang out.
We're going together. He's really going to let me walk to wherever we're going beside him! I'm sorry I was such a bad revolutionary. But it's not over yet. I'm so glad you let me die beside you. It was all I ever wanted, except to fight beside you. I'm sorry, to all my friends, that I didn't fight with you. I hope you'll forgive me. Our barricade didn't change the world, and it didn't change France, and it didn't change Paris, but maybe it did prove that some people care. And I don't think we'll be forgotten. I said we would be, but...I think I was wrong. Someone will remember, because it's not over yet.
