Vashti's Complaint

Disclaimer: This story is not originally mine. It is based on the biblical Book of Ruth written way back in the day.

A/N: This story was orginally an assignment for a class. The assignment was to write a story from the bible from another point of view. This is the story of Esther from Vashti's point of view. That's the king's first wife, in case you didn't know.

It really isn't fair that my husband, King Ahasuerus, disowned me for that little Jewish girl. My name is Vashti, by the way, just in case everyone has already forgotten about me. All I did was refuse to let him parade me around like a trophy, to show the people and princes my beauty. I thought that it was silly of him to put on a huge feast just to show off. I disobeyed one little command, and he disowned me. Now really, does that seem fair?

It wouldn't have been so bad, except he soon gathered together all the beautiful virgins to pick from them a wife. What a shallow, shallow man! He chose little Esther who was just a simple common girl. Even worse she was Jewish although at the time no one knew the secret of her heritage.

Shortly after that, my ex-husband promoted Haman. Haman had a plot to kill all of the Jews in the country. Of course her cousin and guardian, Mordecai, didn't like that at all, being Jewish, so he pleaded with Esther to stop the king.

Now this is what makes me so mad. All Esther did was look pretty and prepare a banquet for the king and Haman, and suddenly Ahasuerus was practically begging to do a favor for her. He promised her up to half of the kingdom! Ahasuerus never did anything like that for me! But Esther was too stupid, I suppose, to take him up on that offer. Instead, all she asked was for Haman and him to come to another banquet the following night.

But luckily for her, they were both so happy about the second banquet, that once more Ahasuerus promised her anything she wanted, even half the kingdom. Finally, Esther realized that it was an opportune time to reveal that she herself was a Jew and that she wanted to save her people. Haman fled like a coward and begged for his life before Esther. But Ahasuerus was so outraged that he ordered Haman hanged on the same gallows that Haman had planned to hang Mordecai the Jew.

So after that, everything was just happy ever after for Ahasuerus, Esther and Mordecai. Mordecai got power through Esther, and Esther managed to save her people. She had Ahasuerus so thoroughly under her thumb that she really did get him to do many things for her, including kill all the enemies of the Jews, which I think is a little extreme. It wasn't as if Haman's actions were his sons' fault, but Ahasuerus hanged them anyway, proving how ridiculous he can be when he gets worked up about something.

After all that, I still can't believe that Ahasuerus disowned me. How could he? I was a good wife, sort of. I didn't cause trouble, except for the one little time I disobeyed him. I certainly didn't make him war against an entire group of people. No, in my opinion, Esther turned out to be much more trouble than she was worth. He would have been wiser marrying a simple, easy girl or, best of all, keeping me.
