You can decide who the girl is. It could be Winry or Paninya or Sciezca (I think I spelled that wrong) or... well... anybody.
Anyway, enjoy!
For the Pocketwatch
They laughed at the joke, and sat together in comfortable silence for a while before something occurred to her.
"Hey Ed?" she asked, leaning backwards in her chair.
"Mmhm?" he wasn't really paying attention, she noticed, his gaze straying towards the menu posted on the wall of a nearby cafe.
"Why'd you become a state alchemist?"
Immediately, she wished she hadn't asked. The first thing she saw on Edward's face was surprise, and then pain. Sadness. Guilt. Regret. Hopelessness. She nearly reached out to him, to comfort him, but knew he would reject her.
The answer that went unspoken hung in the air:
For my brother.
Always, always for my brother. Anything for my brother. My arm. My heart. My soul. My life. Anything for Al.
She could see it in the way his eyes strayed towards the suit of armour before he snapped out of his trance.
For my brother. For my sins. For my brother.
Because it's all my fault...
Because I should be the one suffering, not him.
She could swear she saw it: the self-hatred in his eyes, the tiny furrow in his brow before he regained his composure.
He gave her a wide grin: comforting, cheerful, and fake.
"Ah, I did it for the pocketwatch." he joked, grin still in place, haunted by the hurt that had come before it.
