Elena and Elijah had a dysfunctional relationship at best and at worst a downright abusive relationship. But it was on both sides. Each of them loved the other dearly but knew exactly how to make the other one hurt and how to get a reaction out of the other.
From the outside they were the perfect couple but their close friends knew their relationship had a lot of issues. They both loved each other with all their hearts but they had hurt and even killed each other more than once in the last 20 years.
They had left each other or threatened to do so an uncountable amount of times but they always ended back together because when it was bad it was awful but when it was good it was amazing.
They had even gone as far as to accuse each other of cheating. Both had issues and insecurities when it came to love and they took them out on each other. Not caring if they hurt one another, according to Elena, Elijah was sleeping with Katherine and Sage while according to Elijah, Elena was still in love with and sleeping with Stefan and Damon.
Both knew it would be easier on them to just walk away but that would be the easy way. They could stab each other in the back as many times as they liked but the would always come back and they would still love each other just the same. They knew it was wrong but the fights, The pain was what kept them hooked
